Stretched Swede: 2001 Volvo S80 Limousine

During the late 1990s, Volvo decided that it wanted to focus more on commercial vehicles (such as trucks and construction equipment), so Ford Motor Corporation took ownership of the Swedish automaker. This lasted for about a decade, and while the company did not produce any iconic vehicles like the Amazon or 200 Series during that time, Ford transformed Volvo into a more upscale automaker during its ownership tenure. The S80 sedan was the company’s flagship vehicle during this time, which made it an excellent candidate for a limousine conversion, as evidenced by this 2001 Volvo S80 Limousine that’s available here on Craigslist.

This stretched S80 is available in Blowing Rock, North Carolina with a clean title. The seller claims that Swedish diplomatic services created this custom limousine and challenges buyers to “try to find another limousine like this.” This statement is a bit ironic, because the only other S80 limousine in the States is also for sale at the moment, albeit at a much more expensive price than this one.

This example seems like it is completely stock – except for its length, of course. Though this S80 still features four doors, there are now two rows of seating in the rear, allowing for up to six passengers.

Meanwhile, there are still two individual seats in the front of the vehicle, as well as a partition between the front and rear seating. If you were only looking at the front two seats and dashboard, you could easily assume that this is a regular S80.

Under the hood, you’ll find a 2.9-liter inline 6-cylinder engine, which generated around 200 horsepower and 207 lb.-ft. of torque from the factory. The drivetrain has only traveled 72,000 miles so far, meaning there should be plenty of life left in this limo, though the seller does not specify much about its running condition.

For $3,900, this unique Volvo limousine can be yours. Could see yourself chauffeuring your friends around town in this?

Appears above average rust & aluminum corrosion in the engine bay. Hmmm….

I was a Volvo service manager when the S80s came out. Lots of grunt on acceleration. And lots of unhappy customers with the lack of quality from Volvo. Engines are basically good. The rest of the car I have no use for. Volvo really dropped the ball starting with the 850s. And have not figured out how to pick it up yet. Look at Craigslist for used Volvos, Bad electronics, injectors and or bad transmissions. And we won’t even go into front suspension and steering components that fail prematurely. MY BIL and I both had 740 Turbos. (great cars) His wife decided a wagon was in order and wanted a V70. I told him not to do it. He didn’t listen, he was not happy.

Never have seen any appreciable trans problems in this model Paul. Those XC90 T6 AWD though with the GM transmission now that was a deesaster. Ford really hosed Volvo on that one !

I assume its the same gearbox as V70? At one stage there were more broken for sale than running it seemed due to the gearbox issues but agree same for XC90, its the reason i wouldn’t touch one.

I don’t think the sellers statement about rarity is as “ironic” as it is dumb. A Google search would have turned up the other one easily. Not a bad looking “Grosser” but as noted a Ford Volvo is well……..a Ford quality wise.

Not that there is anything wrong with that. Much
