Reader Charles H. sent us this great find, which is absolutely stuffed to the ribcage with options! Located in Naples, New York, it’s up for sale here on eBay, with bidding currently under $1,500 but the reserve is not yet met.
As you might expect from a New York find, there’s some rust. However, repair panels are available for these cars and it may not be terminal. The seller does mention frame rust, however there are no pictures of it. I’d certainly want to know more before bidding. You can see the “Town” roofline here (no rear quarter window) and the Landau bars. The 1966 was the only year of the three of this body style type where the “Town” roofline was available; you can read about the four available roof styles here on automotivemileposts.com.
This car really was stuffed with options from the factory, with power steering, power brakes, power windows, power vent windows, power door locks, a 6-way power seat and air conditioning. Unfortunately, the car has now acquired optional mold and other crud that has taken over parts of the interior. It’s hard to tell if the upholstery is salvageable or not, but it will take a lot of work for sure.
The 390 V8 is all present and accounted for, even including the air conditioning components, but after driveway and barn storage and not having been driven for many years, there’s no telling how the engine is internally. All in all, this might be a good deal; it depends entirely on the extent of the rust. Any Barn Finds readers close enough to take a look at this?
To me the ’60s Birds have always looked like what artists drew for “cars of the future” back before there were T-Birds: broad, low, and with lots of glass.
I like the ’62 and ’63 from earlier more than this ’66, and they seem to be in better condition than this one, but all of them look much better to me now than they did years ago. I’m glad they named them Thunderbird instead of some of those 5000 names that were considered, especially the goofy ones that Robert listed earlier today.

Love the rear end styling, especially when the taillights are sequential. The front end, not so much.

When listing today’s classics for sale over the cyberworld, folks really need to visually share details on what they merely text as FRAME RUST (extra-important for uni-body cars like these).
I mean, if they know enough to list it by text, why not show their evidence of something so pivotal in one’s consideration of such cars? It’s not like they’re getting any bids anyway, maybe they would by ethically sharing some reality..
Otherwise, i fear folks would think the worst and never even look twice, which is too bad for such a special Thunderbird (or any car listed really) which may end up unclaimed as a result of such ‘hidden’ fears…

I saw a car of that description at a car show in Columbus, Indiana. It was FULLY loaded with all that this car has, plus factory cruise control and the 428. The big thing, though, was this car was a rag top, and had a polished brass radiator top.
IMO, the ’64 – ’66 Thunderbird has the best instrument panel of any car ever created. The swing – a- way steering wheel, the chrome gauge surrounds, and the super cool speedometer was the real deal.
