Stunning Survivor: 1966 Chrysler Town & Country

This 1966 Chrysler Town & Country wagon has recently left long-term barn storage, discovered with under 70,000 original miles and minimal rust. The wagon cleans up incredibly well and has kept a tight radius after being sold new in Towson, Maryland. The body has very minor rust, and the interior is downright stunning. Find it here on craigslist with a 383 under the hood and an asking price of $8,500.

The 1966 model is one of my favorites for its imposing and chiseled good looks, with zero concerns offered for its brick-like aerodynamics. This thing just looks like an angry ambulance sans the flashing lights, and actually would do well as a prop in the Halloween movie of your choosing. It features nine-passenger seating, air conditioning, automatic transmission, and more.

Of course, the pictures of it cleaned off will really blow your mind. How incredible does this Town & Country look with the dust and cobwebs blown off? The paint still looks presentable as do the wheels, and there’s no visible evidence of significant cosmetic blemishes. The seller notes rust in the spare tire well and above the fender skirts on both sides – that’s it.

It only gets better when you step inside, and the pictures in the listing of the rear seats folded completely flat should make you question why we ever needed SUVs. The interior isn’t perfect but it’s damn nice for the age, and it retains its period CB radio. The price listed here seems downright reasonable to me, and I’d love to see this wagon dropped slightly on dog dig wheels.

And don’t drop it. Let the car keep it’s dignity.

What a shock. A seller that actually cleaned a car they dragged out of storage prior to listing it for sale. Someone should have informed him by doing so, he hurt his profit margin since everyone knows the dust, dirt along with random rodent and bird poop add at least a few thousand dollars to the sale price.

The car looks great, I have no idea if it’s worth the asking price, but I hope he sees some reward for his effort.

I know everything, all the time. But have to admit I have NO idea what dog dig wheels are. Or did somebody just not proof read his copy well enough?

The CB radio is a Hallicrafters CB-20. This is a 5 channel rig that takes two crystals per channel. List price was $99.95.
This was the car that your aunts, uncles, and cousins piled into for those weekend trips to the lake. I can almost smell the cigarette smoke!

In truth SUV’s are nothing more than all wheel drive station wagons. Not to many cool looking cars are around any more except the retro muscle cars. Marketing has led us back to station wagons. One of the big pluses to cars like this is you could go camping and sleep in the car stretched out with room to spare. There are plenty of full sized SUV’s being built on truck chassis that weigh in as heavy as this does any gas mileage is only marginally better then this car as well. I hope the new owner doesn’t turn this into this new work vehicle for his house painting business.

My kind of wagon ! Skirts on a wagon ? Throw in some cornering lamps, and you get the full meal deal.

Don’t worry, we won’t. My wife and I purchased the car last night and I plan on restoring it to it’s original beauty. Now if only I can find some tail light lenses for it. Sadly the two on the car are both cracked.

Seth, there are several MOPAR parts companies that advertise in Hemmings Classic Car magazine. I bet they can find the tail light lenses you need. Or contact the Walter Chrysler Car Club……..many many members in the USA willing to help.

Congrats Seth that’s a great, great wagon! I had a 66 NewYorker and loved it. If you need tail light lenses get a copy of Hemmings look in the Chrysler parts section, there is a guy in Massachusetts who advertises in there (can’t reveal his name off hand) who has everything for Chryslers. Good luck!

Trying to remember if I saved the tail lights from a similar car that I stripped 10 years ago. I know I have the roof rack and all the associated trim. Hmmm. Time to start digging.
The one I stripped was dark turquoise metallic with a black bucket seat interior, a/c, and tinted glass. I know I have the front seats and all the glass.

Like the Grand Canyon, no picture gives a true representation of how BIG this car is. You have to see one in person.

Seth, very well done. I had one, and it never failed me. It was Beige with a 383 and was a lovely car and hauled everything! No need for SUVs.

I am working on a 72 now. It was the test car for where to position the lifts in my old building. It is just plain long.
