Success Story: Kelmark GT Headed To Texas!

As some of you likely know, I am helping to clear out a large collection of salvage and project vehicles from a private owner. You can read more about the collection here in Part I; here in Part II; and the latest update in Part III, readable here. We also have a dedicated post on the trucks in the collection viewable here. The Kelmark GT project is headed to Texas for an epic rebuild; Barn Finds reader Michael M. filled us in on his plans below.

“What will happen next is building a mid-engine chassis. I’m probably going to be going with a Audi 4.2 liter engine / transaxle setup. The front suspension will be Mustang II and the rear suspension will be from my wrecked 300zx. As for the body, it will be getting reworked also, maybe redo the existing paint scheme. Talbot racing mirrors, Ferrari Dino front and rear bumpers, rear tail lights will be from Hella, side marker lights Nissan 260z.” Thanks to Michael for sharing his plans with us – we want to see it when it’s done! For other projects up for grabs, check out the links above or below.

And remember, if you have a classic that needs a new home and would like to sell it here on Barn Finds, you can read more about getting it listed here!

Ugh… give us a real update when the project is finished…. otherwise it’s just an advertisement for a project.

    daCabbie,
I understand what you are saying, but dang! How ’bout a little optimism? Too this point I just think it is cool that anyone has shown the interest & enthusiasm to @ least “rescue” it for now. What happens from here, who knows? Now that it is out of the thicket, I’m pleasantly surprised to see how much of the wacky, era appropriate paint job is intact.
For whatever it may be worth, anyone reckon some history can be sorted based on that paint scheme?
I wish any future owners the best. Would like to see it once new life is breathed into it. Neat car & story (so far).

I’d love to know the history as well. It’s patriotic, that’s for sure! One of the commenters when it was first published mentioned the VIN tag indicated it was an early model sold as an “assembled” car by the Kelmark factory, so it probably does have an interesting story.

    Save the paint job!

Thanks for this update, good to see some of the vehicles being moved.

“Dacabbie please go visit another site. The rest of us enjoy reading about the hobby of rescuing forgotten and discovered rare and not so rare cars and like to live vicariously through others that take the time and energy to save them.

I like seeing the cars when they are trailered to their next great adventure…but agree we don’t need too much updating after that–some of us might get jealous of the new owners’ time and attention given to their new purchase. As far as this Kelmark, maybe it was assembled and painted to go on tour advertising the company’s offerings on the show circuit. Based on the color, I’m guessing this was sometime around 1975-76.

I like the update idea, pretty easy to skip the post if not interested.

I see it is up for sale with the old pics. Must have changed their mind?
