Supercharged 1952 MG TD Project

The MG TD is sometimes considered the flame that ignited the sports car craze here in America. With its small footprint, low weight, and agile steering, it was the polar opposite of what the big three were cranking out. The only thing the little MG needed was a little more grunt. Well, someone took care of that by adding a Judson supercharger to this car! Find this potentially fun project here on eBay where bidding is currently at $3,650!

Looks like someone cut up the dash to add some auxiliary gauges. That’s not the end of the world because you can always get a new wood panel. The wood you need to worry about is in the body. The exterior panels were shaped over a wooden structure and if there’s rot in the door jams you are going to have your work cut out for you.

It looks like someone has painted the frame and installed new floorboards. It’s hard to tell in the photos but it looks like the brake lines and some of the suspension components have been replaced. The seller states that the car was mostly just taken apart in anticipation of a restoration. As long as the body is solid, this does seem like a good place to start.

Here’s a good reason to overlook the car’s faults! That Judson supercharger is a desirable piece that adds a good amount of oomph. Superchargers were a popular upgrade back in the day because they provided a fairly simple path to power. The seller claims that this unit adds 20-25 horsepower. That may not sound like a lot until you realize that these only came with 54 ponies stock…

This looks like a big project but I’m seriously tempted to drag this thing home. These MGs are already entertaining to drive and the added power of that supercharger would make this one a real hoot! It may not be the most advanced or even the prettiest sports car ever built but for the money, you not going to find more fun than this little red car will provide!

Interesting. Wonder how that tiny original mill stood up to the supercharger. Different anyway. so If my feeble mind and 2 brain cells are working , with the ‘charger working you are still only looking at around 75 hp. Good luck if you decide to take it on! Stay safe.

I am thinking about selling D Willys and getting a TD for a project. As I age I really do not want this big of a project. It is cool but to much for me to take on now. Pretty cars when done. I am hoping fun to drive also.

I had one back when I was 18 (63 years ago) and it was tons of fun in those days and it could corner like a painted stripe!

Don’t want to sound negative, but most English cars came with a permanent tow strap attached to front of the frame. The money needed will be great….good luck.

And I am led to believe that American cars came with extendable “fairy wheels” to stop them rolling over on corners! Both negative comments.
