The Telephone Booth Dragster!

Telephone Rod

About a month ago we featured a wild wine barrel hot rod and now we have this over-the-top telephone booth dragster! This crazy creation came out of the same collection in Germany. It was built in the 70s and was deputed at the Canadian International Car Show just like the other car, so I assume it’s the work of the same builder. This one has some unique features though that make it worth checking out. If bidding doesn’t get much higher, it might even be worth picking up just for kicks and giggles!

Telephone Booth

The seller has gotten the engine running, but after 30 years of storage it is still going to need some work before driving… or calling? The seller mentions that the engine sounds impressive. Video please! Apparently, the throttle is controlled by the phone dial inside the booth. I’m not sure how you’re going to steer or stop, but someone is going to have fun figuring that out. If you want to be the one, the car is located in Großnaundorf, Germany and is listed here on eBay. This bring a new meaning to the phrase “mobile phone”…

“If you build it, they will come”. I’m not sure anyone will be coming.

I looked it up in the on-line dictionary and it’s a word! “Deputed”, that is. I learn a lot from this website

It’s time to pull this car apart, sell the phone both to some collector. Then you would have a clean slate to rebody this into something that you can drive, something that looks cool. This car was ugly when it was built back in the 70’s and its ugly now, I guess that was the point in its time. All see here is the potential to be something else.

I’d replace it with a photo booth, a vinyl curtain on one side and no windows.

This makes me think of the Munsters TV show car a little if it was black and gold with red drapes inside. Don’t ask me why I like it, I can’t figure it out but I just do.

I love cars and everything car related, but this is one of the dumbest creations that I’ve ever seen. 😕 ….and undriveable to boot!

What’s the point? Art? Art is usually attractive.

I came here to make that joke! I don’t see what the point is. It isn’t a dragster, it’s the start of one with a phone booth awkwardly stuck to it. How would you control this thing? And what dragstrip would let you try? I don’t see a roll cage, and the seating position appears to be standing. I have to assume the builder had more money than brains or taste.

I agree whole heartedly but you have to remember it was the 70’s the age of disco balls, platform shoes, and bell bottom pants. Aren’t you glad our artistic tastes have changed?

I’m sure it won’t take much to “dial” -in this deal and get it to “hook”-up…I wonder how well it does in the “quarter”?………… I defiantly wouldn’t do “long-distance” with it….I’m sure it would be a “ring”-er at any car show and would “collect” some sort of prize….It just needs the right “operator”….. Maybe for Superman?

Ah, the early ’70s. When hash was the way to go, and this car seemed like a good idea until the high wore off.

Break it for parts. That day the designer learned to not drink from a bottle that had no label.

Great comments gang! The thing is, the youth of today would never understand that the cab of this rig is where we had to go to communicate. I hope to see The Red Barron here next. The one with the chrome helmet.

When I was a little kid in the early 70s, maybe in the 4th grade I got one of those Scholastic books that had wild cars in it. There was the “Anycar”, “Anycar II”, many Barris cars, The Red Baron and this car was in the book as well. Ugly or not, the car made enough of an impression on kid to make a life long gearhead.

I find the “Chop it up for parts” comments a bit baffling. What, there aren’t enough parts lying around from other 20 million Model Ts that were built for you guys to make rat rods out of? I think the car is a piece of history from when building hot rods might not have been in good taste but at least creative. This is good one for a static exhibt in a museum somewhere showing just how silly the 70s really were so the phone culture people have something to share on Instagram.

Oh, my bad, it’s a Model A. Yea, definitely hard to find any of those to make nondescript hot rods out of to sit in a garage next to some guy’s Harley bagger.

Hi Wiley, I agree. That’s how it was in the 70s. She is a piece of old school car building back then and should be preserved as is. Myself, I would be proud to have her sitting next to my bagger! Phone home. PS, The 70s were not that silly. Got the t-shirt. Take care, Mike.
