Topless Goat: 1967 GTO Convertible

67-gto-convertible-1

Originally a factory HO car, this 1967 GTO convertible is a survivor, but is in need of some work. Clean overall with some rust and a missing top, the coolest feature of this GTO is it has a 4 on the floor! The factory HO engine is missing, but the current engine runs, and this GTO could be enjoyed as is. Bidding is currently up to $11,100. Find it here on ebay out of Staatsburg, New York.

The seller has the build sheet for this Goat, and he claims the current engine is not the original HO engine. But despite the missing HO engine, the current 400 runs and we bet this is still a blast to drive with the 4 on the floor.

The interior is in fantastic condition, especially considering there is no top on this car. The power top frame is still presently with the car, and functions. The interior looks to need nothing, other than cleaning the vinyl section on the floor on the drivers side. The driver side seat also has a split in the middle but you really have to look for it. The body of this GTO looks solid from the outside, but looks to have the early onset of rust on the underbody. The exterior of the car wears some blemishes, featuring a few dents, and some rust over the passenger rear wheel arch. There is also bubbling around the taillights as well. A restoration would be fantastic for this one being a claimed factory HO 4 speed convertible, but depending on the rust, we suppose it could be enjoyed as is for a little while.

We can certainly imagine the rumble of the engine, while rowing the gears with the top down on this GTO. Not perfect, but definitely a cool car with loads of potential. We think we all need a car like this, what about you? Would you pick up this GTO convertible?

Not my favorite gen but great color combo, HO, convertible, 4 speed, I like it, seems the eBay bidders do too.

Funny, this IS my favorite generation, but I am not fond of the color combo. A neighbor had one, RED with a white interior and convertible top. Absolutely beautiful!

Pretty decent project in my book, I like the black or dark maroon one better in the background.

From the multiple pictures, there’s a lot of rust on this baby. Need to check the frame closely for dangerous rusting. My mom had a 67 Lemans convertible and got rid of it because her mechanic (someone she trusted) told her it was dangerous to continue driving it due to frame rot. She also lived upstate on the Hudson.

What’s that black convertible in the background?

Could this have possibly been a parts car for the black one in the background? Or perhaps this one was just too rusty (as AMCSTEVE predicts) and the black one is plan B?

This thing has the worm, dip it and there will be nothing left but Swiss cheese. Find a better example.

Carefully inspect the frame on this car. I bought one some years back from upstate NY in what looked perfect condition. It was (is) a nice car, but the frame is rotten in the hidden places behind the rocker panels.

A friend let me drive his ’67 Goat w/4speed. I was used to driving a Valiant with a 170 slant six and three on the tree. I gave it some gas and let off the clutch like usual, boy oh boy, did that thing move. I wasn’t even trying.

67 GTO in the background. I see holes in the frame in the pic. So buyer had better look close at it. It’s probably why it’s for sale.

Reason it’s for sale is I have seven of them and they will all be for sale shortly

        No doubt about the collection.
I see 5 different ones between the auctions for this and the hardtop.

BTW guys, this car is very clean compared to the coupe. That one is in a seriously eaten up condition.

I don’t want to be mean here, but both quarter panels have an uneven look to them – even in the photos supplied. I wonder if this thing has had some bumps there that were repaired.
I hope I am mistaken, but i think it might be time for a closer look before buying.

Anytime the owner/Seller is in the paint and body business and he is selling it, that should say something. What, I’m not exactly sure.

My brother in law owns a body shop, & he used to build some nice rides for himself. Over the past 10 years, he has picked up 4 or 5 projects with the intention of finishing them. But they sit for a couple of years because he can’t find time to work on them due to insurance work. So he ends up selling them after doing little or nothing to them. Six months later, something catches his eye & the cycle repeats.
