Treasure Found: 1984 Nissan 300ZX

right

Imagine buying a building and its contents then finding a car inside! You’d wish it was an XKE or Porsche, but this Z-car would still be nice to have. It’s listed on Craigslist over the hill in Reno for a reasonable $3,000, especially since it’s a 5 speed and not a 2+2. With only 107,000 miles it could be a great deal.

This ZX is said to be rust free and it looks really nice in the pictures. It has a little crack in the windshield and is missing a piece of trim. The owner changed the oil and flushed out the fuel before starting it. Japanese cars are becoming collectible so this might even appreciate. It could at least be a dependable and cheap driver. It will need new tires after sitting so long and perhaps a new windshield. Or, do you think it might end up costing more than its worth?

looks like it might be a good deal on a fun driver. but i would want to look real close at the title. also might run the tags to see what information that brings up. nice find.

Seller plainly states it’s a Turbo . . . at least when I read the Craigslist post. Maybe he didn’t originally but as it’s posted now it says turbo. I too would like to make sure the title’s legit. Stranger things have happened though. I had a friend who’s father had a Bugatti Brescia that he found abandoned in the weeds years ago in Socal. He managed to get a title to it too.

In spite of the random photos it looks like a pretty good car through the glare and deep shadows. I can see why the seller might think it’s too fast for his son. The scoop on the hood gives it away—the seller doesn’t mention it but it’s a Turbo version.

These made 200 HP from a 3 liter V6. I remember following one once when I drove a first year 240Z. That 240 was the best performing early Z car I ever saw, but the Turbo 300 ZX just walked away from it without working up a sweat.

I wonder whether someone would sell a building that just happened to have a nice running Turbo 300 ZX in it, but I suppose stranger things have happened. I suppose maybe the keys just happened to be in it too, plus the signed-over ownership papers.

Anyway, if all that’s in order, and if this car really is a long-time resident of dry Reno, or Sacramento, then it should easily be worth $3K to a fan of vintage Japanese sports cars.

Excellent price and like stated b4 from a dry climate, a serious collector will travel for this one. I usually shy away from first year body/engine changes myself!
