Tri-Power Treat: 1965 Pontiac GTO Convertible

For Pontiac GTO enthusiasts, this is a car that would potentially have your mouth watering. This 1965 GTO Convertible is a numbers-matching car that appears to be in extremely nice condition. If this Iris Mist classic ticks all the boxes for you, then you will find it located in Londonderry, New Hampshire, and listed for sale here on eBay. Bidding on the GTO has reached $30,000 at the time of writing, but the reserve hasn’t been met.

This is a Pontiac that has a real “wow” factor about it. It’s pretty hard to find anything much to fault on it, from the Iris Mist Poly paint, through to the white soft-top. It wears non-original Keystone wheels, but these suit the style of the car quite nicely. The exterior chrome and trim look just so good, and it is a car where you could stand and admire it from any angle for hours on end.

When we lift the hood, that’s when the mouth-watering really starts in earnest. This is a numbers-matching car, featuring a 389ci Tri-Power V8, a 4-speed manual transmission, along with power steering. With 360hp on tap, this is a car that provides some pretty impressive performance figures. It can accelerate from 0-60mph in 5.9 seconds, while the ¼ mile can be devoured in a mere 14.5 seconds. The top speed was only a relatively low 113mph, but this is a car that can get there awfully quickly. The car has received some recent work to help it run and drive nicely. It has been fitted with new fuel lines, and the carburetors have been treated to a rebuild. Those Keystone wheels have been fitted with a new set of Firestone tires. A new aluminum radiator should help to keep under-bonnet temperatures in check, while the car also wears a new dual exhaust. The end result should be a car that drives like new, and with only 66,800 miles on the odometer, it is also a GTO that is far from being worn out.

Opening the doors of the Pontiac isn’t likely to cause any potential disappointment, because the presentation inside the GTO is just as nice as it is everywhere else. The Parchment vinyl trim looks to be close to faultless, while the dash and pad could best be described as immaculate. Apart from a couple of aftermarket gauges hanging under the dash, the interior appears to be completely original, right down to the factory AM radio. The owner says that the car has never been smoked in, which is a bonus for a car with interior trim as light as this. The staining that can result from people smoking in cars can be pretty difficult to shift from even vinyl upholstery, especially if it’s a light color.

There is no doubt that this Pontiac GTO Convertible is a stunning looking car, and what lies under the hood makes it incredibly desirable. This would also help to explain just why the bidding has been so strong up to this point. Is this a car that’s lure and desirability is so strong that you really can’t resist the urge to bid on it?

Stunning. That Iris mist looks better on this than it does on the 72 Firebird featured earlier.

Beautiful styling..especially the rear taillights. One of Pontiac’s best ever.
The car is handsome from any angle and a convertible…wow and the color is perfect on this one.
When I was young, there was similar model on a car lot I passed when walking to school…I drooled over that 65 and would walk around it every time I passed by, until it was sold. As soon as I saw this listing…flashback. Thanks.

I prefer the ’67 Tail Lights, perhaps because a neighbor had a red over white GTO of that year. Funny how nostalgia steers us, eh?

I have an 87 Corvette that’ll do 0-60 in 5.9 sec with 120 less horsepower and it cost a lot less than this car.

I have a seven-speed blender that will do more RPMs than your Vette, and it was $200. Irrelevant comparison? Yep.

My blender was like $45 all in. You must have gotten yours before the bubble burst.

Personally I don’t go for either the colour or the red line tyres, however, apart from that it is one stunning motor car.

” 3 deuces and a 4 speed, and a 389, listen to her tachin’ up now, listen to her whine,,,C’mon and turn it on, wind it up, blow it out,,,GTO”,,, very nice car. It’s what it was all about in 1965.

I like the beachboys reference rube. This car would be fun to own and drive. it would get all the attention every where you would drive it and park it. Especially at cruise inns.

While I’d prefer a hardtop or a 2-door post, this car ticks damn near every other box. The hokey red and blue hoses excepted, it seems to present very well.

Nice looking goat, but for 30K+ I would not expect to see the telltale block behind the rear wheel that says “my emergency brakes are non functional”.

Here comes the wet dish rag. I had a ’64 Tempest Convertible, albeit not a GTO with triple deuces so I’ll admit, no comparison drive wise.

But this year is one of my favorites in terms of design. Its just imho a really clean design with the edges where they belong and the profile that hangs together, like cars used to before they became shaped like beans.

I just have a serious problem with parchment interiors. The Iris mist would look better on a Citroen, I know, I know, I’m nitpickin but the color combo is just too ‘fey” for me.

This design just calls out for a different color combo and I think will hold back the potential top end.

To me the color of the dash and the white pad seem to clash , otherwise its pretty nice & I hope the seller gets all he can for it.

I’m surprised that I don’t remember seeing this at any of the local car shows. I’m sure I would remember it.

If it doesn’t sell, it will probably be at the big car show in Manchester over Labor Day.

I had a ’65 Capri gold GTO with the same parchment interior. The exterior color was not repeated on the interior as in this car. The dash was all black with wood inset around the gauges and the door sills were parchment to match. I question this car’s originality in that respect. Great package though. But if you want to drive it robustly the brakes should be converted to discs. The original 11″ drums are woefully inadequate.

I agree with chebby. I can take my 14 speed blender out any day, gets great mileage and is not only a time capsule but a history of many memorable evenings! if it quits, wallyworld is open 24 hrs. I still have a 1938 john deer wheel barrel, great patina, survivor, time capsule, missing the front wheel, and one handle. great investment potential! i’ll even throw in Deanna Troi’s phone number! Please note: I am in no way attempting to diminish this ultimate classic. I have never understood the world of classic/collectable anything. cheers to the new owner!

Major Nelson drove one of these in I Dream of Jeannie. Great time in this country. Today it’s so called disabled kids wandering our streets glued to $1,000 phones with $5,000 in tattoos on them and a cigarette and take out coffee.

Well that hits it for me. That was my car in high school, in Primrose/Black/Black. Keystone mags. I bought it for $200 with the parts for a complete drag racing engine in trunk, minus the 2x 12:1 TRW blown pistons. Put it together during ‘independent study week’ my junior year in HS. It was the fastest car in town, and people drove from 3 states to come race me, an 18 year old kid in a $200 GTO. I smoked out the control tower with a line-lock burnout at Oxford Plain Speedway Dragstrip, I could hear the guy in the tower lamenting his lack of view. Good times.

The ’65 GTO came out my junior year of HS and I do recall the first time I saw one of these in the color combo seen here, my jaw dropped and I was in total awe of that beautiful machine. The “A” body ’65 was one of the best mid 60’s designs ever to come out of Detroit IMO, and I am still in the hunt to this day for a nice original ’65 goat hardtop. I do know where I can buy a ’65 LeMans Ragtop in the same color combo, complete with buckets and 326 4bbl auto.
This listed car is a nice find and one I would like to own but on the wrong coast for me to even consider. Wish the new owner the best with their new classic!

Nice color outside…. flipped a nice 65 Lemans convert a few years back that was at a body shop – stalled resto project….it was missing the 6cyl/3sp floor shift power, the seats and the bumpers but was damn rust free. Then the dealer/buyer flipped it at the same swap meet – went to Florida as I saw it on EBay months later still missing those one year only bumpers……..

One for all the naysayer’s out there who discredit the GTO as the first muscle car. Muscle car…not race car or super rare expensive car few bought. Read the comments above, nothin but love! A speedy youth oriented car with a boat load of options, the super car wars were just beginning.
People here will hate me for saying my favorite GTO’s are the fast back ’68-70 cars….but these earlier styles have been growing on me lately. Nice ride.
