Tubbs & Crockett Approved: 1984 Mercedes 500SEC

Can you imagine a more perfect place for this Koenig-modified, widebody-converted Mercedes-Benz 500SEC than Miami? I couldn’t believe it when I saw the location on eBay. This example is made even more unique by being a genuine gray market car that was modified while in the motherland before being imported to the U.S. Find it here on eBay where the suggested opening bid is $25,000 with no action yet.

The seller’s description is tricky to decipher at times, but it sounds as if the Mercedes began life as a right-hand drive model before being converted to LHD. In addition, the first owners commissioned known German tuner shop Koenig to create a replica of a brochure-cover vehicle, which apparently is a near-duplicate to this car. Note the widebody flares and spoilers.

The interior features a host of upgrades as well, both from the factory and Koenig. This includes color-matched interior pieces along with deeply-bolstered and powered Recaro leather seats. The seller notes it left the factory with unique add-ons like a built-in minibar and phone system, but the Orion Red interior is original. I can’t believe they even color-matched the phone.

The deep-dish wheels are a must-have for any 80s German tuner car, especially one this wide. The opening bid is strong, but if the car runs well, I could see the SEC being bid up to this amount. Enthusiasm for 1980s classics is running at an all-time high, and even more so for one-offs like a Koenig-build custom coupe like this Benz. I’ll admit: I’d throw a bid at it if I had the dough.

      hello weird that this car is notified of German origin
      the front plate is a French plate 75 (Paris)
      EVW is a registration in the 80s

      There is a photo of this car in a Parisian parking lot dating from 2003 right next to a yellow Testarossa Koenig may be owned by the same person
      in any case I would like to know the history of this vehicle

    Part of the reason cars like this one pop up in Florida is because Florida will title and hang tags on anything that moves.

    After reading the fleabay gibberish, I had some red flags pop up. the body kit resembles a Koenig Version II kit for W126 but there are some differences that would cause concern of originality. ASAIK Koenig was not absorbed into Daimler fold. That distinction belongs to AMG. The fact that it’s car started its life in Germany may be that the seller is stating the obvious. Otherwise why would it need a RHD to LHD conversion?

    Last, the seller has over 500 stars and 100% feedback. However for the most part the feedback is given for items bought. Only 2 feedbacks for items sold and one of them is neutral.

    real AMG wide bodied 560 SEC are in the low 6 figures – this one not so much. Looks like a poor imitation of the real thing.

    Well for an 84 i think the car looks really good, i cant do red guts . But wow what a great job on the body, A great look. Ebay eh, paypal eh, Ill take CL , even with all the spam

    This is a true hardtop! In ’84! Yet, i don’t see how those rear side windows can roll down all the way! Was there a domestic version? If so, no WAY a true hardtop gets by the feds in ’84. I’m surprised THIS 80’s car was allowed to be brought here with such 60’s like features.

    In the 80’s it was common for importers to bring European only models to America, they had to get federalized but standards were much less stringent in the 80’s.

    This is a classic example of what NOT to do to a Mercedes Benz.
    It played the lead role in the movie “how to unsuccessfully butcher a
    once nice car”. Unfortunately this car turned into ugly, worthless junk.
    P.S. Hopefully all these “tuners” of the 80s will face justice someday for their car crimes.

    Wow!! What an amazing example of 80’s high end car Art. From what I see this is the real deal and even taken to a higher level with the interior. These cars are unequaled by today’s mas-production wannabees. Sorry I missed this one.
