U-Code 440/4-Speed: 1970 Plymouth ‘Cuda

Major project?  For sure.  Impossible?  Well, for me, yes.  But if the next owner is skilled, ambitious, patient, determined, and just about every other adjective one can think of then I guess it could be accomplished.  If you’re all of this and looking for an E-Body project, this 1970 Plymouth ‘Cuda might be worth a look,  Located in Reseda, California, it can be seen here on eBay with a current bid of $15,000.  There’s no reserve, so the high bidder has bought the car.

While this is a good news/bad news ‘Cuda, unfortunately, a lot of the news is bad.  But let’s start with the good news, which is that the car is claimed to be a real U-Code ‘Cuda, and if that’s the case then the car did leave the factory with a 440.  That 440 is now long gone, although the seller says he can provide a rebuilt ’70 non-numbers matching 440 for the right price.  The car is also said to have originally been a 4-speed, but there’s now a Slap Stick and 2 pedals inside, so it must have been switched out at some point.  The seller says after he acquired the car that he got in touch with the original owner, and was able to buy the original 4-Speed from him and that it does come with the car.  The car is said to have originally been equipped with a Dana 60 Super Track Pack, but that’s no longer there either and the car now has an 8 3/4 rear end.  Furthermore, the VIN tag is also MIA, and although the original owner told the current owner he remembers removing the tag he can’t find it now.

The “Cuda was also wrecked in the seventies- twice- and the photos here and here show the outcome of the second collision.  The story goes that after the second time it was wrecked, the original owner bought it back and stripped it down to the way it is now and sold it to a gentleman that the current owner bought it from.  It sat for decades like this, and another bit of good news is that the rally dash was removed decades ago and has been stored properly.

While there’s plenty of rust visible inside on the floorboards and trunk pan, the part we can see underneath doesn’t look too bad.  What are your thoughts on this 1970 Plymouth ‘Cuda?  Do you think all the labor and expense that will be required to return this one to its former glory is worth it?

Was going to suggest dropping the shell on top of the Hellcat remains, but this just looks like a mess.

    I foresee a six-figure sale at BaT in this ‘Cuda’s future….

Cant find the original vin, sure…..only two pedals I see are brake an emergency brake….certainly looks like a factory mounted slapstick to me, from look of welds where slapstick mount and console mounts its been there awhile….I’d be very skeptical of this cars originality

Scam alert, I agree. This came with a 225/318. Got a build sheet? You can tell a girl you have ten inches, but until she sees proof, it is just hearsay. Now here is an idea. Pay a grand or so for this rusty hulk, take your time in the garage after work and fix it up so it is a labor of love for you. Maybe have a teenager in your life help, teaching skills and bonding with them. Put in the engine of your choice, then drive it with pride and pass it on to your kid after you croak. That is the way the hobby used to work. Until people get this money idea out of their heads, it will never change back for the better.

LOL, nope, you are absolutely correct and I put the pedal paragraph back to how it was when you first saw it. Sounded better that way anyhow! I thought the same thing as you, that at minimum that Slap Stick has been there for a long time…..

The firewall has also been cobbled up. This was an A/C car. If you look closely, you can see the patch panel on the passenger side of the engine bay.

I also would agree with previous comments that this car never had a 4 spd as the floor board would have also had two huge holes with the 4 speed tunnel would go. No evidence that this has been patched up.

The rally dash that was removed decades ago was more than likely from another car as this is not an A/C dash pad. Lots of statements incorrect on this car.

Inspect this car hard before buying.

Just how many red flags come with the car? Can we see pics of them too?
