Un-stalled Project: 1959 Chevrolet Corvette

Chevrolet’s now-iconic sports car began life in 1953 and barely survived as the early editions came with the same inline-6 that you could order in a family sedan. Things changed in 1956 when a V8 was added and styling was updated, and the numbers started to climb. This 1959 ‘Vette is a once-stalled project that has been passed from one family member to another in hopes of finally seeing it completed. We’re not sure of the Chevy’s current whereabouts or if it will ever be for sale, but the car’s interesting story can be found here on Motor Trend. Thanks for the heads up on this one, Larry D!

Production numbers for the Corvette would creep toward 10,000 units in 1959. Having added dual headlights the year before, the ‘59s didn’t look much different than the ‘58s. Chevy’s 283 cubic inch V8 powered them and they could be ordered such that between 230 and 290 horsepower would be the output, including the “Fuelies” with fuel injection. We don’t know how this car was built as it had already been modified before the current family got involved.

The current caretaker’s wife’s uncle acquired the Corvette many moons ago. The car had already had some mods and the original goal was to turn it into a nice street/drag strip car. To further things along, the uncle began buying all sorts of parts such as new seats, bumpers, and anything from A to Z. As the boxes came in, they would get stored around and on top of the Corvette which was collecting dust.

A decade went by and no meaningful progress had been made, so J.P. Romeo stepped in to take over the project (he’s the nephew by marriage of the fellow who started the ball rolling). While it’s not specifically stated, the photos provided show the car buried, then on a trailer, and finally in another garage where visible changes are taking place, so it’s fair to say the ‘Vette is out of the hoarder’s way. We’re told the frame is solid and the paint okay, so the first order of business is to get the car running again. We’re not sure what steps J.P. will take next, but we hope he reports in regularly so we can watch the car come back to life!
