Unblock This Trans Am: 1977 Trans AM

'77 Tans AM

Most of the finds we see were driven into the barn or garage and simply forgotten, but once in awhile we come across finds that someone had the foresight to put up on blocks in hopes of saving the tires and chassis from the ravages of being parked. This car’s condition, according to the seller, is “barn find” and is still parked up on blocks. This 1977 Tans AM is listed here on craigslist in Springfield, Illinois and is priced at $5,500 OBO.

'77 Tans AM engine

This car, according to the seller, has been on blocks for over 15 years and he is the 2nd owner. There is no mention if the motor turns over or if the car was running when parked.

'77 Tans AM int.

You have a 6.6 liter under the hood running to a 4 speed, with a Hurst shifter mounted on top! The interior is showing it’s age, but this could be a fun place to be with some work, especially rowing through the gears with that Hurst.

'77 Tans AM rear

There are 24 images in the ad and there you can see the T-tops, rally rims, more interior shots and some of the undercarriage.

'77 Tans Am front

The owner says that everything is still with the car and this car is a “rare color combination of white with blue graphics.”  We don’t know about that, but we do know that 11,402 Trans Ams were produced in ’77 with a 4 speed. This is a titled project and we think that this find may make some gear-heads day.

Motor-on,

Robert

I don’t know about being a rare color combo also, but who knows? most ( I don’t have the figures) that year were silver or black nothing about the 42K miles, has it rolled over? judging by what appears to be the original seats, it ” could” be 42K . usually a seller would have a sentence or two about the intentions, to bring it back, or why it was stalled .although it appears to be in ” as found” condition, we don’t know what shape the paint is in either because of the dust/dirt . but it has great potential . Also something about the engine running or not would be helpful

Back in the eighties on of my brothers had a. White 76 TA with red and maroon graphics. It was a 400/ 4 spd car. Rusty quarters from us being on the gulf coast but FAST! He and my uncle rebuilt the engine. Added a comp cam intake and headers. Holley 750 double pumper. IIRC he used 389 heads to raise the compression. It had a hurst competition plus shifter and I used to have to move it around in the driveway if he wasn’t home as my folks couldn’t figure out the reverse lock out. I was around 11 or 12 y.o. (!)

I couldn’t stand the sight of these late model TAs – but now I’m not so sure – there would be some induction noise when you hit the go button – do these pollution motors spin like the ole ones?

A coworker back in 78 had a new T/A Gold with Gold interior 400, auto trans, it was fast but my 78 Ford short bed with a 400 and auto trans could keep up with it. I wasn’t too impressed with it and I’m a Pontiac guy, I think the Smokey and the Bandit movie made them the sales hit at the time.

Sweet… I built one of these for my lawyers’ son and he kept it for years.. I also remember when these were new.. If you revved the engine from idle, the factory sound went from a sort of purr to a growl… Real nice cars that were optioned out and had sporty looks that appealed to a younger generation..

Pontiac should still be in production. Without styles like the G6 & G8. Ugh..!!!!

As a HS senior in 1985, I had a ’76 TA with a 455/4-speed. On paper, that combination may sound impressive but in reality, I think it was only about 180 HP….not quick by any means. To this day, an early ’70’s Fbody (’73 Z28) sits in my garage. The T/As of this generation are much more appealing than the Camaros of similar vintage.

This car has the 400 ci engine, ironically a better performer than the 455.

This thing looks like it was ridden/driven HARD and put away in a wet/humid! Insides appear to be moldy, steering wheel and other metal components are rusty! My guess would be that it is 142K not 42K. Looks to me like a full restore is needed. At least everything is there. (while the resto is being done, conveniently forget to put all the emissions crap back on it, that will give it its “manhood” back)
