Unknown Quantity: 1979 Chevrolet Camaro Z28

1979 Chevy Camaro Z28

This original-looking but somewhat tired Z28 has an unusual story. The owner purchased the car sight unseen, but plans have changed and he’s selling it having never laid eyes on it. The car is located in Montgomery, Alabama, the owner is in California, and the car is listed here on eBay with a buy-it-now of $4,950 but taking bids starting at $200 with a reserve. Looking the car over, it’s obvious that there are some damaged components, such as the driver’s side headlight surround, the plastic end caps and the entire interior. The odometer shows 65k miles, but there’s no telling if it’s gone around once previously or not.

1979 Chevy Camaro Z28 Engine

Looking at the engine, I’m wondering if the headers and what I think is a non-stock fuel system would have made this car too difficult to get past California smog regulations. Perhaps that’s the reason for the sale? In any case, would you be interested at the buy-it-now price? Let us know in the comments!

If it didn’t have T-tops I would buy it not that far from me….these cars are on their way back up…not much power, but good handlers…..just hate T-tops….ugh…

even the econo engine will put out a decent amount and one can always stuff in any of different: 302, 305, 307, 327, 350, and 400 cuin engines and still pass smog if they have all the plumbing etc. I’d worry about rust and crashes!–have it inspected!

I despise listings like this. The seller gives next to no information but waxes poetic about how concerned he is that a buyer feels comfortable about their purchase.

Also, the line about “going in a different direction” is total malarkey. Go to his website and you can see several of his sold vehicles resided exclusively in salvage yards before he sold them on.

Frankly, I like the business model and would love to do it myself. But he shouldn’t try to shade something as a project he changed your mind on when this is one of several vehicles he clearly buys at Copart and flips onto eBay.

Sorry – rant off. Looks like a good car. I just wish the listing was a bit more BS-free.

Look closely @ the first photo folks…looks like this is a sale picture from Copart Salvage Auto Auctions. Copart not only sells damage-salvage this could be a theft recovery or worse…a flood car (a “swimmer”)…the seller is in one place and the car is in another..not even close!!! Sorry, If I can’t touch it (or the seller at one time); sounds iffy to me.

That thing would never get past the California smog nazis, and probably wouldn’t be worth the cost of replacing the missing “correct” parts for another decade or two, if ever. I’ve dealt with BAR (Bureau of Automotive Repair, which administers emissions -related issues in CA) over everything from gray market cars (that had legitimately received EPA and DOT releases) to stock exotics carefully modifeid cars using all CA BAR approved components, and engine swaps, as well as several times for articles I wrote when working on car magazines, and it was almost always (there were a handful of thinking people amongst the hordes of “dot every “i” and cross every “t” bureaucratic drones) about as much fun as getting a hemorrhoidectomy without anesthesia.

i too think the seller is flipping or curbstoning vehicles. this would need a PI before bidding but might make an interesting daily driver. i would need to know a lot more about the title also. interesting find.

The only post 1974 Z28 of any interest is the 1980. It has the cowl inductor hood and was the last year you could get the 350/4speed. Agreed that it is not a drag car but they go pretty good. I also would go without the T-Top option.
