Use Your Imagination! 1970 Pontiac GTO

Cover up these pictures for a minute and picture a shiny new GTO in brilliant Atoll Blue and a classy black vinyl top. OK, now, snap out of it! This poor Pontiac, a 1970 GTO in Methuen, Massachussetts, left public roadways in 1990. A listing here on craigslist.org seeks a new owner to stop its disintegration before a Priest performs last rites; “Ashes to ashes, rust to rust.” A mere $5000 buys the privilege of spending exponentially more on a restoration. All joking aside, this original four-speed 400 cid (6.6L) car could be a stunner. Thanks to reader AMXBrian for spotting this Bay State beauty.

Most primers are not waterproof, folks. If you prime it, paint it, even if it’s with rattlecan enamel. Otherwise you’re making things worse for yourself or whoever comes next.

For an almost-fifty year-old Massachusetts muscle car, this Pontiac looks better than most. The original console car is PHS documented, and many parts not shown “can be included,” presumably for extra.

The non-running (and presumably non-original) 400 mates to the car’s factory four-speed manual transmission. A Safe-T-Track differential houses 3.55:1 cogs. At 350 HP the 400 gave up only 10 HP to the new-for-’70 455 cid (7.5L) mill (thanks to wikipedia.org for some details). The seller discloses the shocking surprise that the rear quarters both need rust repair or replacement. Will you bring this zombie back from the dead?

If you’ve got the time, money and the parts this could be a good save. As for primer, if you are going to leave a car like this use primer/sealer which is waterproof. That way you have something left when you get back to the project. On any paint project it’s smart to use a sealer before painting.

The car looks real restorable. Compared to some of the rust buckets on here it looks like a fairly solid car. Looks like the car is priced to sell.

Wait this one is not 18 grand with a front end missing? What?

Looks like a good deal in comparison and a four speed trannie 😎

There is definitely potential here but I couldn’t help noticing the panel parts from at least two other cars. White hood green fenders blue body and grille. That not a big deal really once its painted who will know. I’m surprised to see that the floor looks fairly good for a rust belt car this is definitely a restorable car, and if it sell for the right price it will be manageable for the average DIY guy.

I’d want to verify the VIN on this one. It should begin with 24237…. to be a legit GTO. Too easy to fake one with a nose swap.

I love the GM A-body cars, especially the 68-72 models. With that said, I’ve never been a fan of “The Great One”. I wonder how popular they’d be if there wasn’t a song about them. I WOULD like to find a nice T-37 though.
