V8/5-Speed: 1987 Ford Mustang GT Convertible

Fox-Body Mustangs have managed to remain within the affordable category for those in the market for a classic Ford. However, values continue to climb steadily, meaning that they are becoming less affordable with each passing year. This 1987 Mustang GT Convertible fits into the affordable category, and the buyer will be receiving a lot for their money when they park it in their driveway. Located in Polk City, Florida, you will find the GT listed for sale here on Barn Finds Classifieds. The owner has set the sale price for the Convertible at a very reasonable $14,500.

The 1st Generation Mustang is an easily recognized classic, and the Mustang II featured design queues that made its lineage instantly identifiable. With the Fox-Body, Ford’s design studio started their work with a clean sheet of paper, and the looks were a radical departure from the past. That wasn’t a bad thing because the car looked crisp and fresh when it broke cover, and it remains that way today. This GT Convertible demonstrates this, and it looks more stunning still finished in Black. It is hard to find much to criticize about the car because its presentation is superb. The Black paint shines beautifully, with no evidence of chips or other flaws. The panels are as straight as you are likely to find, and the gaps are tight and consistent. The soft-top is new, and the underside photos reveal a classic that is rust-free and structurally sound. All of the distinctive GT plastic additions are in excellent order, as is the glass. The taillights look bright and clear, while the aftermarket alloy wheels with black highlights add the perfect finishing touch to this Convertible.

By the mid-1980s, American manufacturers were beginning the long and arduous task of recovering performance from their V8 offerings that had been lost to tightening emission regulations. The ’87 Mustang GT demonstrated this perfectly because the 5.0-liter “HO” V8 was a little gem. Ongoing development, coupled with the use of fuel injection, saw this motor pump out a respectable 225hp. This GT features that V8, along with a 5-speed manual transmission, power steering, and power brakes. If the owner chose to point the Convertible at a ¼-mile, they would be rewarded with an ET of 15.1 seconds. Keeping the pedal to the metal would see the car run out of breath at 138mph, which would provide a rapid wind-in-the-hair motoring experience. The engine bay of this Mustang presents well for a vehicle of this age. The owner says that the car runs and drives beautifully and that it has a ton of power. It looks like he has spent some money on it recently because I’ve been able to spot a pile of new suspension components, as well as a new exhaust.

This is a car from the 1980s, and that means that interior trim, especially plastic, can be prone to significant deterioration issues. None of those have struck this Convertible because the interior is spotlessly clean. The plastic looks solid, while the dash is in excellent order. The gray cloth on the seats shows no visible wear, even on the prone outer bolsters of the buckets. The leather-wrapped wheel looks like it would benefit from applying a quality conditioner, but it doesn’t look like the leather is going to crumble any time soon. The original radio/cassette player has made way for a CD player, and a subwoofer has been fitted in the trunk. Otherwise, it is all as it left the factory, and everything works as it should. The buyer will find themselves owning a classic that features air conditioning, power windows, power locks, power mirrors, and power front seats.

I initially mentioned the affordability of the Fox-Body Mustang, and it is a theme that is worth revisiting. If we use our feature vehicle as an example, it seems competitively priced in today’s market. It is also affordable, but the values of cars like this have risen by nearly 25% over the past 5-years. If that trend continues, it won’t be long before they edge out of reach of the average punter. That means that not only could this ’87 Mustang GT Convertible be a satisfying car to own, but it could also represent a sound long-term investment. Forget stocks and shares, I’d take the Mustang any day!

Looks like a nice Fox Body convertible. Has a few common and tasteful modifications. Would be nice to have more verbiage on history and condition details. If you want a collector car with some performance and attitude, this one works. If you just want a car to enjoy on a top-down spring cruise, it works here too. Like Adam says, values are steadily rising.

I remember going with my father for a test drive in one of these. It was fairly brutish and the clutch seemed very heavy for the newly minted driver that was myself. But it was probably typical of pony cars of that era. A bit mass market for my taste but parts will be available forever.

Asking 14.5 with no mention of mileage or if engine and/or clutch has been replaced ever?

    I wouldn’t go more than 8.
