VW Beetle Collection: What’s Your Flavor?

bugcollection

What is it about air-cooled Volkswagens that makes them so easy to collect? I feel like every junkyard I visit has a solid helping of Buses, Bugs and other variants strewn about the yard, and sellers like this one here on craigslist have an entire operation devoted to all shapes and sizes of VWs. There may not be anything particularly valuable in the collection, but it sure makes it easy to pick and choose your favorite combination of colors and options for a new project. I’m a fan of the early ’60s models, so if I were to go hunting, I’d want to find a rust-free example from that generation to work with. What would you be on the look-out for? Thanks to Barn Finds reader Dennis S. for the find.

Most pics were taken in 2008, can only imagine what the cars look like almost 8 years later. Wouldn’t mind knowing a little more about the 1970 FB Mustang in the barn though.

Actually, if he’s like I am. I don’t bother resetting my camera when I take pics. So all mine show 2001 on them.

I have owned and restored several air cooled Bugs, vans and a couple of 356 Coupes, and seeing photos like these pain me. Knowing how easily these rust, some serious inspection is needed before making an offer. The seller’s $500 minimum is too high for some of them that are pretty much worthless.

i would go for a newer one with halfshafts and manual trans. i too think these would need a good PI. one of the yellow one looks like it had a/c, i can see the hose hanging down under the floorpan. there is a VW junkyard in Ohio at the intersection of I70 and I77, southeast corner, just south of the local road over I77. it might show up on google earth. interesting finds.
