Wallflower Warlock: 440-Equipped Dodge D150

truck1

If you’ve always wanted a muscle truck like the Dodge Warlock or Lil’ Red Express but hate to stand out in the crowd, this short wheelbase 1977 Dodge D150 here on eBay may be a tempting alternative. Although it’s as plain-jane as they come, a 440-equipped truck like this with working A/C is all sorts of OK with me.

Introduced in ’72 as a new engine option for the smaller trucks, the 440 is a desirable upgrade. Packing a decent 255 b.h.p., the 440 was a respectable performer in the dark days of the fuel crisis, and a far better alternative to the lethargic Mitsubishi diesel that was also introduced in the third-generation truck’s tenure. The D150 here is said to run smooth and reliably with good brakes and a functional automatic transmission.

There’s nothing to write home about in the interior, which is a far cry from the pseudo-luxury vehicles today’s Ram and F150 trucks represent. The cab sheetmetal looks tight, with the only rust spots said to be above the rear wheels and right front fender. The carpets look pretty rough and the horn pad appears to be missing, but these should be relatively easy fixes.

Don’t get me wrong – this is an old work truck, through and through. Personally, I’d be fine with the brighter colors and chrome smokestacks that are synonymous with the Lil’ Red Express, but I’ll always appreciate a single cab, short bed pickup with the biggest engine option available. This D150 is available in Colorado with a Buy-It-Now of $2,000 and the reserve price unmet.

WOW! $2,000 for a big block, A/C, short bed pickup truck seems cheap enough! I’m really surprised someone hasn’t hit the buy it now yet??

Very intriguing, but I don’t believe it’s a Warlock model, as the only ones I’ve ever seen are step sides like the Lil Red Express. It would work for me as a work truck. A long time friend had 2, one a Warlock, & one a standard stepside that he drove daily, hauled stuff, & raced at the strip on the weekend.

The LRE ( and Warlock’s) were stepside trucks and only came with a 360 small block. The Warlock could be had with the 440. The LRE, due to a loophole for trucks did not need a CC, was the fastest US made vehicle from 0-100 mph in 1978. ( that’s a little unsettling) While these were good trucks, this one looks a little tired, and better get a good electrical tester, the wiring on these is very shabby ( I have a friend with a similar one, and very little electrical works) Plus, I think we tend to forget what gas hogs these are. No thanks.

I would be on this one like white on rice if it weren’t on the other side of the country.

This was on Co-Springs craigslist for 1200 a few days ago and is now showing as SOLD…bought and being quick-flipped?

Not very far from me at all, and it’s very tempting to throw an offer at it …must…not…succumb…

Drivetrain alone should be worth almost two grand and part out the rest of the truck,

Not sure if a 72 engine can be made to make big HP cost effective and or legally anyone that knows care to weigh in?
