Warehouse Find: 1954 Mercedes 300

1954 Mercedes 300

The 1954 Mercedes 300 sedan is a relative of the famous 300 SL Gullwing, with a version of the famous inline 6-cylinder under the hood. This particular car apparently sat in a building next to a car dealership for a long time for an undisclosed reason. I wonder why? The car is currently located in Millbury, Ohio and is available here on eBay where the opening bid is $799 with no reserve! Despite the decrepit condition of the car, that seems like it could be a great buy for someone interested in these cars. The photos are terrible, being pictures of a cell phone showing pictures, but between what we can see and the description it appears someone began a restoration a long time ago and never got around to completing it. The 300, or “Adenauer” models were the top end of the Mercedes line in the ’50s; this would be even more special if it were one of the cabriolets, but even this sedan is pretty unusual. The seller states that the engine is not frozen, and the only part they can find missing is the rear seat. I hope someone finds out the history on this car before restoring it!

Yikes! This car went for only a bit over $2,000. The deal of the century, (so far), especially when compared to the latest batch of semi-compacted rust bucket Porsches. This era of 300 and 220 MB are still at or near the top of my list.

May have been a real bargain. I suspect when cleaned up the car is better than it appears with all the accumulated crud.

    Greetings All,

Agree that the car is a deal.

Oval tube frame can be tricky when trying to replace sections and it will at least need some attention.

Yes, the engine is related to the 300SL but they are different in subtle ways.

Last time I worked on one we were making the panels. Chrome better be with the car as it’s hard to come by and very pricey.

Aluminum drum brakes are another fun thing to locate.

Nice ones have the rear parcel shelf a/c vents. but the German Webasto might make me not worry about having a/c.

This came form the era of Pontons, a unibody design and usually rust exceptionally well in the floors and up the pillars because of the jute underpadding which absorbs water from a small leak and wicks it through the whole pad to accelerate the whole corrosion process.

    Later, Ross W. Lovell

I would have my doubts that any transaction took place here.

When people started flocking over there from barn finds, that is when this seller must have realized something is up.

    Strange photos and and captions,

    ALSO :
VIN is actually an engine number.

WHO KNOW WHAT THE DEAL IS WITH THIS THING………….

My guess is ,, that the seller did not know how to pull the plug on the auction and did it this way…..

Ebay listing canceled because seller realized inaccurate information. I’ve seen it happen before. That’s usually the easy way to cancel an auction. In this case perhaps he forgot to mention the car had it’s adenoids removed?
