Warehouse Find: 1992 Ford Mustang GT

This 1992 Ford Mustang GT convertible has been parked for 10 years following a stalled conversion to some sort of drag- or track-ready specimen. Some modifications have already been made, but overall, the Mustang may be closer to showroom specs than the listing initially lets on. Find the GT listed here on eBay with no reserve and an opening bid of just $1.

Given it’s fitted with an automatic transmission, drag racing seems like a more logical place for this Mustang to end up. The listing notes the Mustang has a custom cage installed, and a “…new transmission for racing.” Your guess is as good as mine as to what that means, but it does spark the potential that you could sell off the aftermarket parts to recoup your purchase price.

If it were mine, that’s exactly what I’d do. Strip out the cage and whatever built-up automatic it has, and use the removal as an opportunity to swap in a manual transmission. However, you’ll have to track down a set of keys for it, as both those and the title are missing. The seller says it was driven to its current resting spot and forgotten with 183,000 miles indicated on the clock.

I would, however, leave the period-cool Corbeau sport seats installed. I love period aftermarket seats, and these will look good no matter which direction the next owner takes this Mustang. Bidding is still well under $1,000 at the moment, and if you can track down something in the form of prior registration to register it in a no-title state, it could represent a major bargain.

It has a 4 point roll bar not a cage. There are no visisble performance upgrades, the intake is stock manifold, it even has the factory air box which was the first thing to go when doing any performance upgrade. The seller is just spinning a story, I doubt he knows anything about the history of the car. The roll bars like this one were common in the 80’s and early-90’s, it would fit right in for someone looking to cruise the Jersey shore.

Any bidder should be wary, this is a car from a rust prone state with 180,000+ thousand miles which doesn’t run (no keys) or title. They would be wise to bid as if it’s a parts car to protect their interests.

I see nothing aftermarket either..it wasn’t too hard to put a shift kit in these aod transmissions..maybe that’s what the seller is saying and I would definitely check for rust!

Period Corbeau seats? In the 80’s you could get Recaro’s. Car could clean up nicely though.

Odometer shows 18000, only 5 digits. Auto check title search says 212000 was last reported mileage and that was in 2005.

Let me see if I’ve got this straight – POSTING IN ALL CAPS MAKES A BIGGER IMPACT. SELLER SAYS THIS IS A RACE CAR BUT THERE IS NO EVIDENCE IN THE PICTURES TO SUPPORT THAT. THERE IS NO TITLE AND NO KEYS. BF READER HAS VERIFIED 212K MILES. IF SELLER WASN’T SO LAZY HE COULD WASH THIS CAR AND DOUBLE ITS VALUE (AND CUT ITS WEIGHT IN HALF). THE REAL CLINCHER FOR ME IS THE HALF FULL BOTTLE OF DASANI AND A GENUINE CHILTON’S MANUAL. I’M IN AT $40.00. THAT WOULD BE MY HAUL AWAY FEE…

Pick up the 914 as well for a package deal…you’re losing money not to buy.

Hey wait a minute guys, it does have aftermarket spark plug wires! That, a roll bar and the map to the track ( also on the rear seat) makes it a race car!
    (NOT!)

Not getting the whole race car thing here with a dead stock engine and automatic. Seller needs a different angle….I remember a few top 5.0 drag racers back in the nineties using a worked C4 automatic, built beyond the capabilities of a Ford AOD and more consistent than shifting a manual transmission. Not the case here at all…

Just remember my gal trying to pull a fender on my 440 and 383 C-Bodies out on the Interstate back in the early 90’s after a ball game and refreshments. She could sure wheel that white GT convert !!!

Another co-worker had hell ordering a new one in 1994 explaining he didn’t want a radio or heater – he twisted those body rivets in just over two years of race only runs. Think he did drive it to work a day or two when it was new. His wife was kinda freaked out about it as I recall…

Just another pinto in disguise, these are still easy to find . Id leave to roll bar in it as its a drop top. Its by no means a drag car . The writer needs to get better informed on drag cars and stock junkers as you couldn’t get $100 for the roll bar . Id bet since theres no pics of it that trans might have a shift kit and thats it. This is just another worn out mustang trying to fetch gold when in reality its not worth squat. Wash the pos before you list it ,dirt doesnt fetch gold.

The one nice thing about this car is that somebody enjoyed it and drove the wheels off of it. With over 200K on it, perhaps it is time to stay in retirement.
