West Coast Coupe: 1956 Jaguar XK140

This Jaguar XK140 is a stunner even with half of its paint baked off. Anyone have any guesses as to its original color? This is the latest project we’ve featred with a tattered body and new whitewalls, and I’m starting to dig the look. The seller claims the engine runs, and despite it being non-matching, I’m still loving this straight and solid West Coast Jag. Find it here on eBay with bidding to $15K and the reserve unmet.

Still wearing its period California black plates, this Jaguar XK140 coupe was sold new in Los Angeles, and never left the West Coast. The body is incredibly solid, and the seller notes that despite the worn paint, it remains in excellent condition. Bumpers are also surprisingly sound and I dig the faded registration stickers still adhered to the front bumper. There is some glass missing but if stored indoors, this shouldn’t pose much issue.

The interior has to be half-way through restoration, as the seats are way too clean. The door panels also look quite tidy while the wood trim is as you’d expect for a tired project like this. Floors look solid in this picture and others in the gallery taken from underneath the car. The classic wood-rimmed steering wheel remains in place, and I love seeing three pedals and a stick in the console. That’s the way the XK coupes should be built.

The only real downside is that the 3.8L mill isn’t numbers matching. The seller notes that this replacement unit has even compression numbers across all cylinders, and I’d like to know if the engine was simply dropped in or refreshed before installation, as that will change the projected budget significantly. The seller does note a color of “Pastel Green” in the listing, but I can’t see any trace of it. Regardless, bidding seems light for such a pretty car – will it go higher or stall?

Inside door jams appear to be Cotswold Blue. Outside is Primrose pale yellow), which I do not believe was available until the E Type.

Pale yellow looks like high-build primer to me. At first I thought this was another BHCC front row car but when I looked closer it was far too nice. There’s a lot of work here but it looks like most of it’s there and in fairly good shape.

Nice find. It would be nice to see it when it’s done.

Just checked bidding: $15,500.00 Asking $39,995.00 Too much for this old codger. But, I will say, “You bet it has 3 pedals! This is a 1956 Jag!!” That’s the way they were built, originally. I was 12, almost 13, when these came out and I’ve been drooling over Jags ever since. I’m sure it will find a good home. Nice kitty.

Nice, but ditch the kit car seats and upholstery and hood louvers.
