What A Beauty! 1965 Rambler Classic 770

What a beautiful car! The blue paint is a repaint, but other than that, this is just a wonderful car that spent a lot of time in a showroom as a showpiece. Thanks to Jim S. for sending yet another car in that I’d like to own. It’s for sale here on eBay with an opening bid of $5,000 but the reserve has not yet been met.

By 1965, the Rambler 770 Classic was the high-end version of the “Sensible Spectaculars.” This particular one is showing 35,124 miles and I believe it based on the pictures and history. The story is that the car was originally sold to a local buyer and eventually re-purchased by the dealership and used as a display in the showroom.

Look at that shiny chrome! The seller says the car needs nothing, and this is one case where I’d be inclined to agree with them. The car has won a local show and I can see why. I know I’d love to see this car poking out of my garage! And please don’t argue with me about it being a four-door; this isn’t a hot rod, this is an enjoyable, stock classic that I want to take my whole family out in!

As you can see, the underside looks just as nice as the upside. You can see the rear point of the “tri-point” powertrain mounting system in this shot.

What a gorgeous interior! I would love to spend some time behind the wheel of this car! Even the two-tone steering wheel is beautiful!

Given that this is the 232 inline 6 that lasted well into the 2000’s in Jeep form, we can assume that this engine has a lot of life left in it. I don’t know what this car will end up going for, but if you ever wanted a mid-60’s American sedan I don’t know how you could do much better. It will be interesting to see what this goes for!

I took my driver’s test in my family’s ’64 light blue Rambler Classic 660 sedan with three on the tree. Loved that car.

What an incredible find. These were just the best years for Rambler, as long as rust didn’t claim them. I believe, the 232, 6 cylinder lasted until 2006, with the 4.0. Next to the 300 Ford, these were probably the best motors ever made. I see this car still used the “torque tube” driveshaft. Not too bad with the automatic, but to change a clutch, IIRC, one had to remove the whole rear axle. My grandfather had Ramblers, and I’ve owned several, and the old man had several. Kind of a ” MIlwaukee” thing. Many of our neighbors worked at AMC during this time, and were proud of it, and produced a quality product. I always thought the steering wheel on these was too big, and let’s not forget the driver’s worst enemy, the vacuum wiper, a Rambler exclusive. I’ve been around a lot of Ramblers and I don’t remember that paint treatment on the back of the roof. Kind of cool. This car should be in an AMC museum, if any exist. ( Wisconsin Auto Museum in Hartford, Wis, about 40 minutes NW of Milwaukee, has a large selection of Wisconsin built vehicles, but not a lot of Ramblers) Rambler was hummin’ during this period ( just got over “MT’s Car of the Year” in 1963) so things for Rambler were hot. Great car here.

C&P Telephone in Maryland had ’69 Americans in their fleet. They were still equipped with vacuum wipers. The 232 engine had a lot of torque that made them fun to drive.

I’m not a big Rambler fan but for someone looking to get into the hobby with a no-fuss vehicle that would be a hit at the car shows I don’t know how you could do better than this. It would cost you 3 to 4 times as much as the current bid price to build one like it IF you could find a decent chassis with most of the trim intact to start with.

These were considered a very premium car in different parts of the world. Sold in France as Renaults, locally built RHD in Australia and South Africa. Ramblers were much loved in the middle east, with an assembly line for Americans in Iran.

Love this one. My father had a dark green Rambler 660 and anytime I had the opportunity I took it for a run. Loved it.

With 4 days to go I suspect this will sell for a bit more, a lot of car for the money.
