Wooden Wheels: 1972 Porsche 911

911

You might think when you see the wooden wheels that are holding up this hulk of a Porsche 911 that you had seen the worst of it. You’d be wrong. Look closer at the pictures to see the true horror. Thanks to Barn Finds reader Jim S for this interesting find! To the seller’s credit, it’s advertised as a parts car. I do think (call me an optimist) that with a LOT of hard work, this car could be brought back. There would be no way to do it economically if you were paying anyone to do anything, and it would never be the one to start with if you wanted a show car. But, with enough cutting, welding, and sourcing of parts, it could be refurbished. If you’re someone that has always wanted a 911 but had no budget, only a strong work ethic and time, this is your car.  What’s left of the 911 is located in Vestal, New York, and it’s being sold here on eBay with bidding currently at $787 and no reserve. The pictures almost say it all, but then you read the comments at the bottom of the page and apparently the car was flooded after it had been stripped down. I’m really interested in what you P-car folks have to say about this one!

I find the question about whether this heap has been swimming quite comical. Obviously anyone taking this on will address the body, which would be the primary concern with a swimmer. The second concern, particularly with a German car is the wiring harness. Try as I might I see no evidence of wiring. The third, of course, is the interior. Again starting from scratch. So, the statement in the question ‘so buyers are aware of what they are getting into’ quite literally created an impromptu spit-take on my part. Unless the person buying this has severe cataracts, I’m pretty sure this beast having taken a little dip is of virtually no concern.

I guess perhaps if you just wrapped your beloved 1972 911 around a tree and are looking for a new shell to transfer the rest of your car to, this might be a candidate. Otherwise no.

If this thing had a flat, would you fix it with a belt sander?

Bring it to the next PCA annual meet and have some fun. I’ll bet the reactions would be all over the place—surprise / disbelief / nervous laughter / more disbelief / a bit of annoyance / maybe some serious annoyance / “get that thing out of here” / “no, wait, the seller says it had MFI and S trim” ……

The Chucker, MikeW, Wayne Norman: great quips!

Interestingly this isnt the first time this has been done. In February a 911 was listed in Craigslist in Minneapolis in the exact same manner.

Route 30/I84 in Mosier Oregon. Gorgeous drive and a nice place to stop if you are in Hood River.

At least have the decency to get some crappy may-pops on something with the same bolt pattern.
