XL Barn Find: 1976 Ford Cortina 1600

1976 Ford Cortina 1600 XL

For many of us XL means one thing, extra large, but in the case of this Ford Cortina it stands for Xtra Luxury. I’d say that is a good thing, but considering this car was fitted with a 1600 cc instead of one of the bigger more powerful engines, extra luxury probably just adds unwanted weight. The 1600 is actually a good little more and I’m sure at one time this Cortina was a nice daily driver. Well, after 20 years of sitting in a barn in Cambridge, it’s no longer a driver but with some work it could see the road again. Find it here on eBay in Cambridge, UK with a current bid of £2,150.

This Cortina was supposedly driven into the barn when it was parked, so hopefully it will run again without too much work. It needs some work to the interior to be a comfortable place to be, but it primarily just needs a good cleaning inside and out.

The seller has already gotten the engine turning over, but hasn’t attempted to start it. Being the Pinto 1600, it should be a simple engine to fix and work on. With the right upgrades, these engines can put out decent power for their size and could make this find a great daily driver! I’d clean it up, install a new carb and get this thing running. How about you?

It’s not a Euro Ford, it’s a Brit Ford, made in UK

    Phil,

Nice to see a picture of the MKIII again!
    I believe this car is a ’72,or ’73.
    I had a ’72 with the 1600,that I bought in Canada.
They were never sold here.I was probably the only one
in the US to have a MKI,MKII,& MKIII at the same time.
