Z-Code Big Block: 1964 Ford Galaxie

$_57

Here is another big block muscle car that has some rust issues. This Ford Galaxie isn’t quite as rough as the Chevelle from earlier (although it’s close), plus it still has its 390 V8 and transmission. The floors and trunk will definitely need work and I’m sure you will find more rust hiding elsewhere once you start tearing into it, but it might not be too bad of a project. While I like the Chevelle and its 4 speed, I find myself being more attracted to this Ford. I’m not sure if it’s the body style, the $4,400 BIN or just the fact that I love blacked out muscle cars, but this Galaxie has a mean look to it! You can find it here on eBay in Chester, New York. So which would you rather have? The rusty Chevelle without an engine or this slightly less rusty Galaxie with an engine?

F$&$ed with rust – monkey with spray packs should have left it alone

I’d pass on both. Neither one is really even good enough to be a parts car. The only way the Galaxie would be worth the effort and cost would be if it was a factory 427/four-speed car with the numbers matching engine and a correct drivetrain. The only thing the Chevelle is good for is a VIN tag and title.

I like these big old cars…cries out for 427/4spd….didn’t they have 390 flags on lower front fenders? It needs floor but I can’t see the pics well enough to tell if there’s more. If it was closer, I’d spend 3500 and see what I could do with it. Drag-raced against a lot of these back in the day..would make a neat clone race-car…

Kind of reminds me of a moonshiner car but I would pass just like I would pass on the Chevelle.

A real solid car?????? Nahhh!!! The wheelhouse in the trunk is a see-thru as much as the floor pans.. Parts car maybe..

I never considered a 390 in a full size Ford a muscle car. where are the flags on the front fenders? Maybe the fell of from rust.

Who knows, maybe in New York this is a “Solid Car”. It’s over $3500.00 now so someone thinks it’s do-able.
Anyway, this one is proof positive you can spray bomb a rust bucket and it will look good from 20 feet away…. maybe 30 feet.

I keep seeing these cars and I have one thing to say to the young guys. Keep walking, …………………… Don’t put your time, effort, or money in these kinds of projects. RUST, RUST, and more RUST. Let some other fool do that. Sixty years old and I know better. Listen to me! Been there and done that, ………….. The rust never stops.

If this is a solid car, I have some swamp land to sell. Whoever buys this car had better be prepared for lots and lots of body work.

A friend’s brother, when I was a kid, had a XL “R” code similar to this. It was the fastest car I ever rode in (for a 10 year old) It was black with a red interior, and I’ll never forget those 2, 4 bbls. and that oval air cleaner. This one, while a little rough (Fred Flintstone would be right at home), it’s not out of the question. One of my favorite Ford’s ( perhaps because of that ride when I was 10), and are hard to find today, and 2 door fastbacks like this routinely bring 5 figures, in nice shape. Cool car.

Here in Argentina I had a 64 XL 4 door 390 4 speed, buckets, air condicioning (#s matching, I contacted the Galaxy club of America and they told me that it was a very rare equipped car, they were not 100% sure but thougth it was the only one), quite rusty but solid floors, it was too expensive for me to restore it but fortunately for the cars the sons of the firts owner bougth it, they have a gigantic body & paint shop and will restore it.

I’m always nervous around cars owned by Rattlecan Rodders who throw away critical parts and claim it’s a hot rod.
