Having a little red Porsche parked in the garage has been the dream of many sports car fanatics, but Porsches aren’t cheap. The owner of this 1968 Porsche 912 inherited it from their father, who had always dreamed of having his little red Porsche running and driving so he could teach the kids how to drive a stick. Sadly his dream was never completed and his family feels it’s time for it to go to a new owner who can maybe finish the project. The seller is asking $8,500 and can be contacted here.
It’s always difficult to accept that you lack the means and the time to finish a project, but sometimes letting go of it is the best thing. This car has been parked for the majority of its life, as the owner’s father purchased it in 1980 and it went straight into the garage. Sometime around 1987 they had the car painted in its current red paint and then parked it back in the garage. A few years later it made its way into a new garage, where it has stayed ever since.
The car had become a storage shelf for lumber, but after clearing everything off of it, it looks straight. There are a few dents and dings here and there, but nothing too serious. It’s in need of a good cleaning and will obviously need some maintenance work done to it.
It’s always scary to buy someone else’s project, as you just don’t know what you are getting yourself into. This car could be an easy fixer upper or a massive project, it will all just depend on what’s wrong with it. The seller noted that there appears to have been some electrical work done, which could be the reason the car was parked in the first place. Hopefully all the mechanical systems are intact and salvageable, but without seeing it in person it will be impossible to know what is actually wrong with it.
It’s sad that the seller’s father never was able to share those special memories with his children in this little red coupe, but based on how fond they are of the car, we would guess that they have some special memories of it and their father. Hopefully it will go to a good home where it can be finished and bring many fond memories for years to come
I would guess New England somewhere.
Anybody got a better guess ?
It looks like the radiator is leaking and the turbo bearings are out of sync…
Well, I got most of you, except for Dave …and paul.
Seriously, how do you synchronize turbo bearings anyway.
I even got fred to drop the caps lock, a FIRST !!
If it’s dry, no rust, snake don’t have to worry, it’ll be leaving this country in a hurry…
sorry, edit: Dale, by the way: more observant than most.
@Dolphin: that put me at ease.
Good luck, Brian, with the sale if I did not have to many cars already this would be on my list.
NOT MY CUP OF TEA @RADDISH THAT WAS NOT ME WITH THE CAPS OFF.THE REASON FOR THE CAPS IS TWO STROKES AND LOSE OF USE OF MOST OF MY LEFT SIDE.NOW INSTEAD OF TWO FINGER PECKING I’M DOWN TO ONE AND IT IS A PAIN IN THE ASS TO KEEP GOING BACK AND FOURTH.I’M NOT YELLING AT ANYONE BUT THE TWO EX’S AND I TRY NOT TO OFFEND ANYONE.I’M JUST AN OLD CAR GUY WITH A FEW STORIES TO TELL AND I LOVE THIS SITE BECAUSE OF ALL THE DIFFERENT CARS AND THE PLACES THEY ARE FOUND.THANKS EVERYONE FOR UNDERSTANDING.
Fred as an old car guy myself, keep doing what you do.
Radiator?
Uh…..TURBO bearings??? It’s a Porsche *912*, not a 930 Turbo! It doesn’t even have six cylinders!
It is air cooled. No radiator to leak.
@ Richard: I laughed out loud at the comment from hORSE rADDISH! I think he is implying the unstated idea that until someone gets a project like this home and starts digging into it, they won’t know what could be any number of issues that brought the car to a standstill, as well as what the needed attention after all the years of sitting is going to be.
I know of the car. Parma, Ohio. Cleveland suburb
Hello to all. I am the owner of the Porsche, and I am located in The Cleveland Ohio area. If you would like to send a quick email with a phone number I will get right back with you. Thank you.
Brian
Tried to contact the owner, with no luck. This is what I am looking for.
Raddish is at it again, funny guy. 8500 seems fair enough if it doesn’t have rust issues & we are just to deal with the mechanics.
LOL turbo bearings radiator…..I wonder about people sometimes…
I think he meant the radiator bearings are leaking.
Cleveland, Ohio: Be cautious. That’s right in the middle of the rust belt. These cars can have serious rust damage that can make them unsafe / undrivable if it is present at the suspension attachment points. I came close to buying an early 912 recently but bailed because of deep seated rust in those places. This car looks pretty good in the photos, but there is overspray in the engine bay, so the good good appearance of the repainted body under that dirt and dust doesn’t guarantee that the tub underneath is sound. Only a thorough PPI can do that. The engines are surprisingly expensive to do serious repairs or a rebuild on, so caution there too.
But if the car is as good as it seems to be in the photos, the price is very fair and this will be a way for someone to get into a 912 before the prices appreciate beyond reach.
The good news is that although the radiators can rust on these, they are very cheap to replace—close to nothing, actually—and rust very rarely gets into the turbo bearings :-)
why in the f@#k does everybody think that the crap in their garage is worth a fortune? 912’s are nice but this kinda money is f’ing insane good luck….now i realize why this country is goin down the tubes!!!!! Welcome to!!!!
To me, these are allot easier to work on than the later 911. A VW with a Porsche body.
It’s no more a be then a 911. They only share one piece , the oil cap. Everything in the engine is different.
I used to know a guy who worked on a lot of old bugs, and he often said he’d like to work on one of these. Not for me, but hope it finds a good home.
Fred, sorry to hear about your situation, peck away. We understand.
What’s funny about these photos to me is that no matter what part of the country (world) these pictures come from, the garage always looks exactly like my garage.
I agree with horse radish ,
The turbo bearings look completely outta sinc, and the rad is leakin
There is a red ’67 Porsche 912 parked in my son’s garage here in Oregon that I helped him tow home. I have the motor in my garage. He has two sons 5 and 2 years old. He hopes for them to drive it some day. The missing link is me taking the time to get it running (I do cars, my son does computers!) …This story has absolutely inspired me to rearrange my priorities and get that car on the road! Being a lover of cars of all makes, I believe that there can be a lot of good memories made for kids growing up with projects around. Time goes by too quickly! …wake up call for me!! Thanks, Brian!
dolpin my bug has the same issues- otof sync turbo bearing(front and rear)And that peskey rad. i even tried bars leak-wont work.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
