Has To Be Fake: Mercedes Gullwing Find

Free Gullwing!

Josh MortensenBy Josh Mortensen

Update – Within moments of publishing, the listing was removed by the author. Either this was legit and someone just got themselves a 300SL or it turned out to be fake. Which do you think it was?

Reader Paul B just sent us an ad that has to be fake. The caption reads “Old Mercedes” and the picture below it is of a dilapidated 300SL Gullwing. If you don’t what a Gullwing is, it is the holy grail of high dollar Mercedes sports cars. The owner’s description says, “Attn scrappers: I have a rusty old mercedes to get rid of. No engine, Has doors that open to the top. Glass is good”. It would appear the owner doesn’t know what they have here and are looking for a scrapper to just come take the car away. If this is the real deal, it would be the find of the century! Given the ad and the value of these cars, I am 99.9 percent certain this is a fake ad, but how can you miss the chance of getting a 300SL project? Find it here on craigslist in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Special thanks to Paul for this incredible find! So do you believe this ad is the real deal or some type of scam?

That listing went down quick! I still had it open on my phone, so I grabbed a screenshot. I tried to reply, but since the ad was taken down it won’t bring up the email address. If anyone happens to know more, please share!

Fake. This image was taken from a find in Cuba. Try searching google for that image.

I was just searching for the image, but you beat me to it. I wonder why someone posted this? Maybe it was a prank or someone looking to gather emails? It was only up for an hour, so who knows. It’s just too bad it wasn’t real.

You beat me to it. This was in a story several months back about a guy looking around Cuba.

To find out, I Googled “junk 300SL” and expected the same picture to quickly come up. DIdn’t find the exact same one, but I’m pretty sure this Cuban car is the same car.

Anytime you sense craigslist foul play, enter the URL of the CL-hosted image into Google Images (or right click “search google for this image”) and it’ll show you identical images and locations.

Good job grabbing that screenshot, Josh! I was gonna say I’d give them $500 for it if they threw in that uber-rare MB carpeted spoiler there on the trunk! ^_^

Haha I would have offered them a solid $700 even without the carpeted spoiler!

I love that someone would bother to post that on Craigslist when the picture has been around the internet for a long time.

Pity. It was part of an article on Cuban cars. As far as Cuba goes, I want to know how soon I can buy Cuban cigars at a decent price.

It’s worse. It’s in cuba, and since that picture was taken, all the windows have been smashed out. http://www.dpccars.com/gallery/index.php/Mercedes-300SL-Gullwing-barn-find-in-Cuba

Notice that the 3rd picture in the group of the interior. IF that’s the original xmsn, that would indicate that it is one of the first fifty (50) cars built. The production models had the gear lever moved further back, sticking straight up; the cranked lever only used on the earliest cars.

Having never seen a stripped gullwing interior before, I also wonder about those dimpled panels; original or home-brewed…?

    CUBA!!
That is one of two gullwings found in Cuba. Just google Cuba gullwing and you’ll see it! It was all part of the 50s vacation craze for hollywood until all the Americans left their homes and possessions behind. There is also a Abarth double bubble.
