Perfect Parts Hauler: 1962 Ford Ranchero

This Ranchero may not be a barn find, but it could make a good parts hauler for your other projects. The seller has owned it for about eight years and has done a lot of work to it since then. The interior is clean and the engine has been warmed over. Even the suspension has been rebuilt and upgraded. Overall, it sounds like a great driver that is ready for use. It’s located in Portland, Oregon and is listed here on craigslist for $6,500.

Everyone wants a V8, but this inline-six isn’t anything to scoff at. These were durable workhorses and this one has been upgraded with some porting, a mild cam, bigger valves, and higher compression. With better breathing, I bet you won’t even miss those extra two cylinders. The Monte Carlo bar and swaybar aren’t things you normally see in a six-equipped Ford, but I’m sure they really help tighten things up.

red-interior

The look of the matte white paint and red rims may not be for everyone, but the appearance could be quickly changed with some new rims or a can of black spray paint. The red and white interior actually looks pretty good though. The Hurst shifter is attached to a 3-speed toploader and power is fed to the rear wheels through a 8″ rear end.

The more I look at this Ranchero, the more I want it! You can tell the the owner loved this truck and put a lot of effort into making it theirs. They have a couple of kids now though so they are doing the noble thing of selling it. They mention in the listing that they wont haggle on the price though so perhaps they are being compelled to sell it. Either way, this looks like the perfect parts hauler to me!

Somebody is going to get a nice truck at a fair price.

If it runs as good as it looks, this is my kind of truck-let! Always liked early Falcons, and I would imagine a lightly breathed-on Six is probably nearly as speedy as a stock 260, though admittedly that would be my first choice. Not really diggin’ the flat-white paint, but that’s an easy fix.

The owner could have been building this for me: not over the top, but sensible mods to increase the fun factor.

    Yum!

even I would admit that it may be a runner with the hopped up six though I would prefer a 260/4 speed. very nice little Falcon at a fair price!

I was disappointed when Ford downsized the Ranchero. My dad had a ’59 and I thought it was great. Then came ’60 and the Falcon based version, I liked the bigger ones. However, that being said, this one is very good. For me the six is just right; you don’t always need a V8.

There’s one just like it down the street, guy will not sell it. Sits under a tree. 10 years ago it was nice 5 years ago it was good, today it is covered in leaves and moss. Oh and the guy is a crabby old man. But it’s his choice. It’s just kind of sad.

Wonder why the voltage regulator and radio noise suppressor is tie wrapped around the passenger side shock tower support? There should be room in the normal location in front of the washer bag off the radiator core support.

Wonder why ford chose to put the carb and intake on the passenger side of the car
Chrysler g m and amc have the carb ln the drivers side
It would seem that the drivers side would be better with a direct line to the gas pedal

Nice “square” motor = good execration in any gear/rpm. Classic Inlines is gone but the line got picked up by vintage inlines.com. I like the ‘stroker’ 250/4.1 (255 &260 kinda doggie) & many have put them in ‘cheros (just got mine back frm machinist). I think it’s ’60 – ’64 with the smoother/less chrome sides like this & yes i like them best. Besides – when do U haul more than near 1,000# around? These’ll do it.

I had 2 new Falcons. A 61 with the 144 cid 6 and a 63 Futura sport cp with the 170. For what ever reason the 61 lifters got noisy from the engine oil passages getting clogged up. No issues with the 170. Seeing this Falcon Ranchero reminds me of the movie Gold Finger back in 62 or 63 when they compressed a Lincoln Continental and loaded 4000 plus pounds into the bed of a Falcon Ranchero. Only in the movies.

Every time I see that clip w the Ranchero w the crushed Lincoln in the bed I marvel at the amazing capabilities of the Ranchero. I had a 65 289 4ap deluxe trim that we used as a shop truck. Wish I still had it.

The front sway bar was standard on the 1962 Falcon. Nothing exceptional .

AFAIK, 5/8 in sway bar was std. Apparently the “belly” bar was not std but my ’61 fordoor (deluxe trim) has it.

Still up for grabs. It’s certainly a good deal on paper but the real question is how it is in real life. I’m concerned with the quality of the “welded floors”, etc. wish it was closer for me to look at it. My last long distance PPI was disappointing.
