Real Big Block Car: 1966 Ford Fairlane GT

This Ford Fairlane is not only a real barn find, but it’s a real deal big block 4 speed car! When it was new, this would have been one mean machine to drive, with it’s 390 cui V8. Sadly, I don’t think it will be going anywhere under it’s own power any time soon, as it is going to need a ton of work. Thankfully, it’s fairly complete with an engine still under the hood. The outside doesn’t look to rusty, but the floors are looking pretty rough. You can take a closer look at it here on eBay in Gentry, Arkansas with a current bid of $760.

The barn doesn’t have the best of lighting, so the photos aren’t the best. There is only one photo of the engine, and it’s a poor one, but we can at least see that the engine is there. The engine bay is looking rather sparse, which leaves me wondering if there are any parts missing.

I’m really surprised the body looks so good, considering how much rust there is in the floors. Clearly sitting on a dirt floor hasn’t done this car any favors. Replacement floor pans are available, so fixing the floors shouldn’t be a huge issue. I don’t see the shifter, but the seller states that the Top Loader is with it.

The seller has some spare body panels for it that are included. They also note that there is some poorly done repairs from a previous accident. Hopefully, the main structure of this Ford is solid, as it would be such an amazing car to get back on the road. So do any of you have fond memories of a big block Fairlane?

I had one of these years ago, 390 ci but was automatic trans, I loved that car till it lost a battle with two trees. This was my favorite body style of all the Fairlane’s, and a big block 4speed would be at the top of my list. I would definitely want a hands on inspection, especially underneath before plopping down any money. But I’ll definitely be watching this auction.

Looks like the engine is just sitting in there . Not bolted to motor mounts .

I agree. Looks like the exhaust manifold is resting against the shock tower.

Another upside down project. Meaning after you pay the man and haul it away you are upside down. . From the lack of proper storage my guess is that it is very rusty on its underside. Bench seat says it is not a GT. The 390 cast hood scoops are missing and are pricey to locate. Good luck here.

What bench seat? I see buckets and VIN# with S for 390ci.

I’ve long wanted to get one of these and do it Bullit style. Highland green, black interior, big block, 4 speed and American Torque Thrusts.

I was given a ’67 from my big brother when I was in high school. Problem was, he wrecked it while racing, pretty much destroying the front suspension. It was a 289 with a 4speed. I ended up putting the drivetrain in a ’63 Falcon, which was a terror on the streets for years. I still like the ’66 -’67 Fairlanes, and wouldn’t mind owning this one!

Well, it’s no “R” code Fairlane, but the 390 GT was still a hot car. I disagree with Dan, I’d like to see that race. These, with a 4 barrel, put out 335 hp in a light car. They were a hit at the drag strip, stoplight and 1/4 mile alike. These were fast cars, and while not a big fan of stacked head light Ford’s, these are my favorite Fairlane’s. Sorry, this one’s toast. ( I bet someone wants that hood for their Fairlane project)

I have contacts nearby, I’ll take it! Oh, no, HA! April Fools!
Although I like the style, it looks too far gone to warrant spending the dough.

I owned a GT with factory 3 speed tyranny & buckets.
Interesting to note that in 1973 with the gasoline embargo these cars along with the other muscle cars went on the block for cheap. I sold mine for $300…who knew? Also owned 1964 Galaxy 500, 390, 4 speed, a 1971 Datsun 240Z, a 1972 Cuda… all gone.
Probably a fortune in today’s automotive climate.

I bought one with the 390 ,4 speed in the summer of 1974 for $485. When I took it for a test drive. As I went to turn around. The salesman said drive it like its yours. Big mistake for him. I crank that sucker out and scared the h— out of him. It needed exhaust work, brakes ,tuned up and tires. I bought it and still have it today. Spun the bearing in the 390,blowed a 428 up and dropped in a 289. It took as much punishment as both the others. Coming in from Norflok one night. Seeing how fast I could make it home. I passed about 8 vehicles in the slow lane on I-64. Running straight off the header pipes. I had a fifth of wine between my legs and looked in the mirror. Out came a state trooper. I had passed them doing 118 mph. His little red and blue light started getting smaller as I opened it up.Out ran him.Made it safely into W.Va. As I turned off rt 60 in Rupert,W.Va heading for Beech Knob. A car was in front of me. I slipped it into 3rd and was ready to take him. When he gave a left turn signal and noticed his plate looked funny. I took another look and it was the W.Va state police. I dropped it back in 4th. Till I was up the road about a half a mile and gave he–. Made it home in 4 and 1/2. Had a lot of fun it it and looking forward to before long. Great car. For the price of that car–I t won,t last long and I don,t thing its in that bad of shape.
