We have always thought old Power Wagons can look pretty menacing coming down the road, but we had never took much interest. That is, until we saw this battered and beat up 1949 Dodge Power Wagon. We assumed it was rotted out and not running, but supposedly there is no serious rust and it is even drivable! It is located in Manchester, New Hampshire and is listed for sale here on eBay. Bidding is only at $4,622, but the reserve has not been met.
The seller claims that this beast is rust free, but there is obviously lots of surface rust. As long as there is nothing rusted on or rusted through, we think it just adds character here. Who would want a shiny clean Power Wagon anyways? We are not sure if this was really a military vehicle, but the drab green paint job and Army lettering look great. We wouldn’t change a thing about it.
The Power Wagon was Dodge’s response to customer’s requests for a rugged vehicle which could be used “off-the-road”. The truck was based off the vehicles they had been building for the Army during the war. It was tough and could go anywhere with its four wheel drive and 230 cubic inch six cylinder engine. The seller has replaced a few parts here to make sure it is running well. We would still want to go through everything just to be safe.
One of the biggest problem areas we were able to find in the photos was the truck bed. The wood has rotted through in a few spots and will need to be repaired if you are planning on hauling anything. These things were rated 3,000 pounds, so you might as well. We would find some weathered barn wood for the repairs to keep the look consistent with the rest of the truck.
These things were built to work hard so there are few luxuries to be found here. We wouldn’t want to use this as a daily driver, but it could be fun to take off-roading or to use for hauling duties. Lets just hope the reserve is not set too high here and that the next owner appreciates the patina that this Wagon has acquired over the years.
These are very popular in my area of Florida. They are used mainly for dealing with large boats. Particularly in dry dock areas.
Seems to me the bid is already on the high side, Old military vehicles like this are fun but there seem to be enough around to satisfy demand.
The reason this truck is not rusted out is because it was built for the military. It could sit for 100 years, and still not rust all the way through. It’s not like the tin foil, and plastic we drive around today.
I’m wondering if the towing rig that appears only in the first picture is included.
Towing rig?!?!? That is an excavator in the background!!! YOY YOY YOY
This one’s not military, it’s a civilian model. The nose and the lack of a grill guard are big differences. Also, military ones have no manufacturers emblems. I have a ’41 WC-12.
