Rust Bucket: 1966 Porsche 912

We’ve featured several 1966 Porsche 912’s over the years here on Barn Finds. This specific car appears to have been neglected for quite a while as you will see. Found for sale here on Hemmings with an asking price of $12,950 in Brook Park, Ohio. While not as collectable as some other models, 912’s are still desirable as entry-level collectibles. Keep reading to see if you think this car may be too far gone or if it is worthy of a restoration.

According to the classic car insurance company Hagerty, the average value for a 1966 Porsche 912 is $33,000 while its 911 counterpart is $97,200!  With a nearly $13,000 asking price, this particular project seems a bit on the high side. The rust damage is extensive in this car. Nearly every panel shows either holes from rust or at least surface rust.  The floors were said to be replaced some time ago, but the undercarriage still shows a lot of rust.  The ad does state that there is only 55,000 miles showing on the odometer and the car is very straight with original paint.

The engine is stamped “753542” and is a 4 cylinder making 90hp and measuring 1582 cubic centimeters. The ad doesn’t state if the engine is free or any indication of the last time it ran.  You could assume based on the other rust in the car that the engine may be suffering from the same fate. Hopefully the owner had the foresight to put a bit of oil down the spark plug holes before storage, but I wouldn’t count on it.

The interior seems to be as rusty as the rest of the car.  It’s a shame to see such a classic European sports car neglected for so long.  It will take a dedicated restorer to bring this one back to its former glory.  Maybe this car will serve as a parts car for another project. Are you brave enough to drop five figures on a rusty project like this and attempt a restoration?

I haven’t seen one this bad for a while….probably for at least 3 days, when we saw that trashed Targa that was on BF 3 days ago.

Are millenials selling these recent crackpipe junket Porsches? These sellers believe they are owed a trophy for coming in last.

How excited would you be if you heard that there was a ’66 Porsche for sale with original paint, only 55k miles and for sale for just under $13k? That boner you got will go limp a nano second after the first picture hits your screen. Thoughts of a clueless widow selling her husband’s “old car” in the garage will also disappear just as quick.

Yet another Porsche faint suggestion of a car. The arrogance of the seller is only exceeded by the idiocy of the buyer.

Brings to mind PT Barnum there is one born every minute. I have said it before and I will say it again a Volkswagen with 2 carbs and average handling. Much better off with a Lotus Elan, Europa, or a Miata for way less money and much better handling. Or a C4 or C5 vette.

Thank the car gods for rust! Because that’s the only thing holding this rust bucket together. Shoot it, and put it out of it’s misery.

Anybody that allows a car to get into this condition should not be rewarded with a bid over crusher price.

Another example of that fine Krupp steel. Maybe “krupp” is German for “krapp” ?

      Greetings All,

Hey Pa Tina, did Krupp supply Mercedes? I know that someone from the Krupp Family had one of nicest big Mercedes that had been custom made in the 30’s.

Find hard to believe MB used their steel, either that or MB bought a much higher grade than Porsche.

Ross- Don’t have a clue. Some folks on BF seem to think so. Krupp was mentioned in another PorschePileOfRustPost. (PPORP).

Thinking the same thing yesterday. Of course you could say the same about mid-80’s Camaros and Firebirds, and Corvettes with extreme body kits, and Pinto 4 x 4’s, and…

well done ccrvtt. This is beyond ridiculous. I own a 912 in much better condition and there are a lot of Porsche freaks out there selling junk because of the label on the body. Amateurs, leave the room. Both of you.

You know I ache every time I see junk like this. Not even the stupidest of car folks with a fatter wallet than commensurate intelligence,i.e. anyone buying at one of the big auctions, would touch this.

Leaving aside its a very common 912, nice enough little slot cat in and of itself but no one will restore this. Theres no point.

On a related subject I shouldnt have sold my beautiful ’70 911 last year….I mean the prices have gone up even on good 912’s……..

Further evidence that not a single Porsche ever met a crusher.

Madness! I bought an Arizona, rust free 66 912, complete, less motor for $1000 in 2012. It even had Fuchs wheels! Too bad, we can’t see into the future!
