Over the past decade, interest in and value for air-cooled Porsches have grown strongly. If you’ve experienced one, then you probably understand the enthusiasm. Early examples are some of the most sought-after due to their excellent handling, solid build quality, and relative simplicity. It’s gotten to the point that a 356 has to be rusted beyond recognition for someone not to want to restore it. Even shells like this 356B can bring good money, whether as a donor for a complete but very rusty car or as a project to be fully restored. This one is part of a collection that we are helping liquidate. It’s located in Eagle, Idaho, and is being offered here as a BF Auction.
The seller’s father purchased this 356 about ten years ago. Some of the work to restore it has already been started, but work stalled, and it’s been in storage ever since. As you can see, there are rust issues in all the common areas, but it’s not the worst we’ve seen. Someone already replaced some of the metal, and a few replacement panels are included.
Speaking of parts, the car comes with a few major components, such as the transaxle, wiring harness, and cylinder heads. Their condition is unknown, but it never hurts to have items like this as it’s cheaper to restore than replace them. Unfortunately, the engine is missing, but replacements are available. The lack of an engine and badging makes it challenging to identify the engine the car initially had, but chances are it had the 1600 Super, rated at 75 horsepower.
If you are looking for a project to restore or need a sheet metal donor for your 356, this car could be what you are looking for. The car’s title is missing, but the seller is working on getting a title from the State of Idaho. If they are able to get the title, we will update the listing accordingly, but they are listing it as not having a title just to be on the safe side. Be sure to take a closer look at the photos below, and if you need pictures of any specific areas, let us know, and we will be happy to take them for you. If you have any questions for the seller, please leave them in the questions section below or email us.
Well said…
Jim. Maybe he’s a slimy elevator technician that keeps the car running in your building. Maybe he is a slimy respiratory Tech that keeps your beloved mother or your precious grandchild breathing. Certain skilled trades and medical technicians can make a million dollars in 10 years. Don’t go all Howard on us and tag honest hard working people as strictly the inheritors of Dad’s hard earned fortune or undeserving recipients of some ill gotten gain.
I guess I count as one of the folks you refer to as I was in the Air Force during most of my 356 ownership (15) and totally restored 3 of them and used them as basic transportation for over 20 years. Lots of fun, lots of work, and the satisfaction I saved a few unique cars for the future.
I know of at least 3 of these that have been restored by regular guys in their garages including paint. I also know of one who passed before his was finished. I don’t think the money is any different than alot of other cars. I know factory guys that have put a 100 grand in their Camaro or Chevelle. Some people hire it all done, some don’t, always been that way.
I would say to the seller contact Dennis Collins at Collins brothers Jeep in Wylie Texas he is a big fan of these and he may meet or beat your reserve ask especially if he can get a package deal with your other cars and parts
Dennis follows the site and has bought a few of our featured cars.
These are very sought after now. The issue of getting one that needs everything, has rust, major pan replacement, is you can try it but if it does work out and you have to have someone redo it, it will double the cost. Better to let someone who has the $$ grab it and get it right. Now I am not afraid to tackle fenders, door replacements, windows, and some body work….etc. The big hitter is rust, you almost have to do full replacement. These look fixable for sure and if most of the parts are there, you could get a good deal.
Great feeling just to run the palm of your hand on the body panels. Refurbishment can be such a labor of love. Congrats to whomever buys it & getr done !
Thanks for the Philosophy lesson Jim!
You are very accurate in your assessment of the world. Unfortunately it applies to other areas as well.
I wonder to what extent money laundering is involved with those “slimy investments”?
The seller has asked us to pull the reserve. This one will sell to the high bidder!
Like Lazarus, this could be raised from the dead!
This looks like the same car and seller that posted last week, maybe he decided to resist again with no reserve. What happened to the engine that was included in the sale last week?
The seller has two 356s listed, and the other one includes the engine. This one did have a reserve but the seller decided to pull it to ensure that it sells.
