BF Auction: 1965 Chevrolet Chevelle 300 Station Wagon

Bid to: $1,200View Result

Practicality can be a significant consideration when enthusiasts search for a classic to park in their garage or workshop. Those with children usually seek a vehicle that allows the entire family to be involved in weekend trips or the occasional cross-country adventures. Station wagons are the obvious choice, making this 1965 Chevrolet Chevelle 300 worth a close look. It is mechanically healthy, allowing its new owner to gain immediate enjoyment while planning their restoration strategy. If you feel sorely tempted, the owner has listed it exclusively at Barn Finds Auctions.

Don’t be fooled by this Chevelle’s ragged appearance because below the surface beats a heart of pure gold. There is plenty of surface corrosion for the buyer to address, but penetrating rust in its panels is almost non-existent. Any issues are minor, and the buyer could utilize patches to make them a memory. The winning bidder won’t face hundreds of hours of work with a grinder and welder, and the same is true with this classic’s underside. There are small areas in the rear drop-offs, but these are also candidates for patches. The buyer will undoubtedly choose to address the surface corrosion on the floors and frame, and that’s a satisfying task to tackle in a home workshop. The exterior has a few bumps and bruises, but once again, none justify panel replacement. All trim pieces are present, and most look like they would sparkle after a polish. The glass is in good order, with this Wagon featuring the convenience of a functioning power rear window. This Chevelle would look stunning with a fresh coat of Ermine Ivory gracing its panels. However, treating and sealing the surface corrosion would preserve its character and structural integrity for a minimal financial outlay. Whichever path the buyer chooses, it will undoubtedly garner attention wherever it goes.

For those who love their classics with the bass note of a V8, this Wagon delivers. Its engine bay houses a 283ci V8 that sends 195hp to the rear wheels via a two-speed Powerglide transmission. The vehicle won’t threaten many muscle cars at the local drag strip but could still cover the ¼-mile in 18.4 seconds. Considering it tips the scales at 3,476 lbs and can comfortably seat six people, that ET looks pretty impressive. However, this Chevelle comes into its own in the cut-and-thrust of commuter traffic or on the open road. Its drivetrain combination promises an effortless motoring experience, and it should comfortably cruise all day at freeway speeds. For potential bidders, this classic comes with plenty of positive news. The V8 runs smoothly, feels strong, and produces no smoke or odd noises. It exhales deeply through a new exhaust. The Chevelle rolls on new tires and is inspected and registered. The seller recently undertook an extended road trip, with the Wagon cruising at 75mph and completing the journey without an issue. They say it could be a practical daily driver, an option many will find attractive.

An interior refresh would provide a striking contrast if the winning bidder elects to preserve this Chevelle’s exterior. It is unmolested, with no signs of aftermarket additions. The back seat is excellent, although some upholstered surfaces show their age. However, it is serviceable. That means the new owner doesn’t need to rush decisions on returning it to a high presentation level. Trim kits are readily available, and although they may seem expensive at first glance, they are a worthwhile long-term consideration. Installed correctly and treated respectfully, a fresh interior could still present beautifully for many decades. Alternatively, a new owner with patience and reasonable sewing skills could stitch custom trim to stand out from the crowd. Those are but two alternatives, and if the winning bidder lets their imagination off the leash, they could produce something genuinely stunning by following the custom route. When a classic presents at this level, it allows its owner the chance to place their stamp on the finished product.

This 1965 Chevelle 300 Station Wagon is unlikely to win any beauty contests in its current form. However, its structurally sound nature and good mechanical health make it a prime candidate for a restoration project. With new station wagons from domestic manufacturers no longer an option, it falls to vehicles like this to fill a niche in the market. It doesn’t demand immediate attention, meaning the winning bidder could enjoy the classic motoring experience while considering the path they would follow moving forward. That has to make it an option worth considering.

The ’65 4 door is THE Chevelle wagon of my imagination, having had the mid ’80s reissue of the AMT model kit as a kid (and taking the shoebox A/G-body Malibus and their infernal fixed rear door windows that were everywhere at the time as an entirely separate car line).

I have a bunch of extra parts that go with the car: Front and rear bumpers, new window seals, various new lenses, and new Chevrolet emblem

This is a 300 “Deluxe” model. In between top level Malibu and entry level “300” which was a 2 door wagon.

Garage was open one day and seen may motors, few being BB’s, all sitting around a 69 Blazer. Makes me sick every time i take that back road
