BF Classified: 1955 Custom Crosley-Powered Sports Race

SOLD

Location: Newton, NJ
Mileage: Unknown
VIN: Untitled Race Car

Seller’s Description: This sports racer was initially constructed in the 1950s for use in the H-Modified class of SCCA competitions. It was purchased as an unfinished project in 2004 by the previous owner, who performed a refurbishment and reportedly campaigned the car in approximately 51 events with SVRA, VARA, CSRG, and HMSA, including the 2017 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. The car features a replacement fiberglass body shell finished in white with a red stripe and is powered by a Crosley-sourced inline-four that has reportedly been bored to displace 759cc and paired with a Fiat four-speed manual transmission. Additional equipment includes a roll hoop, a fire suppression system, side exhaust pipe, trunk-mounted fuel cell, and multi-point harness. This Crosley-powered racer is now being offered at no reserve in Newton, New Jersey with a spare engine, a single-axle trailer, documentation from previous ownership, body molds, and a bill of sale.

The white-painted fiberglass bodywork features a red stripe and was fabricated by the previous owner using molds taken from the prior shell. The body is mounted to a tube-frame chassis, and exterior features include a roll hoop, taillights, a windscreen, cowl-mounted rear-view mirror, and a side exhaust pipe. The body molds are included in the sale.

Four-spoke 12” wheels are mounted with Dunlop Racing tires, and stopping power is provided by front discs. The seller notes corrosion on the brake rotors as well as sticking caliper pistons.

The cabin houses a single fixed-back metal bucket seat with a red multi-point harness. A head rest is affixed to the roll hoop, and additional equipment includes a fire suppression system, a battery cut-off switch, and a battery box mounted to the driver’s right.

A three-spoke steering wheel sits ahead of a Stewart Warner 10k-rpm tachometer and a custom instrument panel with auxiliary gauges and toggle switches for vehicle functions. No odometer is fitted, thus total mileage is unknown.

The Crosley-sourced inline-four has reportedly been bored to 759cc and was fitted with a single Weber 40 DCOE carburetor, a forged crankshaft, Pauter connecting rods, Arias pistons, Manley valves, Honda valve springs, tubular headers, and a trunk-mounted fuel cell. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Fiat-sourced four-speed manual transmission with an aluminum flywheel and puck clutch. The seller notes that the oil was last changed in 2019.

A spare Fageol/Crosley race engine is included in the sale.
