Seller’s Description: This 1958 Studebaker Golden Hawk is one of 878 examples from the final year of production and was reportedly shipped new to Los Angeles in September 1957. The car recently underwent an 18-month mechanical refurbishment commissioned by the seller, who acquired the car in 2016. It is finished in Tiara Gold and Arctic White over a gold and white interior, and power is provided by a supercharged 289ci V8 backed by a Flight-O-Matic three-speed automatic transmission. The refurbishment that reportedly totaled over $25k included fresh paint, an engine and supercharger reseal, carburetor rebuild, brake and suspension work, interior upholstery, and more as detailed below. Service in July 2019 included an oil and filter change. This Golden Hawk is now offered with refurbishment records and a clean California title in the seller’s name
Designed by Raymond Loewy, the Golden Hawk utilized fiberglass tail fins and a hood bulge to clear the factory-equipped supercharger. The seller commissioned Jon’s Body Shop in Long Beach, California to refinish the body in its reported factory colors of Tiara Gold and Arctic White. A paint blemish is noted near the right rear bumper, and chrome pitting is present on the upper door moldings and on the front bumper.
Factory 14″ wheels are fitted with Hankook Optimo H724 tires. During the refurbishment, Studebaker Parts and Services in Long Beach, California fitted new front shocks and bushings, and the rear leaf springs were replaced and re-bushed. The brake drums were reconditioned, and a new master cylinder, brake booster, wheel cylinders, lines, and pads were added.
The seller states that the interior was removed, surface rust removed and coated with POR-15, and Dynamat sound insulation was added before being fitted with new gold carpeting. The seats, door panels, and headliner were all upholstered in gold and white, and a Pyle head unit with aftermarket speakers on the rear parcel shelf was added.
A two-spoke steering wheel fronts gauges mounted in a machine-turned dash. Just under 22k miles are shown on the five-digit odometer, with approximately 1,800 added by the seller over the past three years. True mileage is unknown.
The Studebaker 289ci V8 was fitted with a Jetstream supercharger from the factory and made 275 horsepower at 4,800 rpm when new. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a Flight-O-Matic three-speed automatic transmission. Work carried out by Studebaker Parts and Services included an engine teardown and reassembly with new gaskets, adjustments, and engine mounts. The supercharger was also disassembled and rebuilt along with the carburetor. The gas tank was cleaned and recoated, and a new fuel pump, lines, and filter were added. A Pertronix ignition system was installed along with new spark plugs, wires, alternator, and ignition switch. The car features an aftermarket aluminum radiator, and service by the seller in July 2019 included an oil and filter change.
