Seller’s Description: 1964 Chevrolet Suburban, originally purchased by the LaFayette School District, LaFayette, California where it was assigned to their Maintenance Department. It was painted School Bus Yellow and had safety lights mounted on the roof. It was sold at Public Auction to the second owner in 1986 when he had it painted metallic brown. I bought the vehicle in 1990 when it had approximately 58,000 miles on it. I used it as a daily driver back and forth to my work place (12 miles round trip) until I retired in 2000. After I retired, I moved from Antioch, CA to Kingman, AZ where I used to old Suburban as part of my Real Estate business. In 2013 we moved from Kingman to Florence, AZ and it was then that I decided to attempt to restore the truck. Starting in May of 2015 I began what can only be called, a 100% Amateur Restoration Project. All of the work on this vehicle was completed by me with the exception of overhauling the transmission which was completed by a professional transmission service shop.
To begin with, the entire vehicle was completely stripped of all painted surfaces, inside and out, down to bare meta. Defects were repaired and all surfaces were primed with self etching primers.
Next, the engine, which I had rebuilt for use in another vehicle, was completely disassembled, cleaned and inspected before reassembly. I installed new camshaft bearings along with a new camshaft. (Edelbrock Camshaft No.7102) with new valve lifters and pushrods. I also installed a new crankshaft, (Edelbrock No.910442) along with new Main Bearings and Connecting Rod bearings. The cylinders were deglazed by honing and new piston rings were installed. A new oil pump and timing gears were also installed. New Electronic Ignition system was installed also.
The stock radiator was replaced with a new, four core, heavy duty aluminum radiator with a High CFM electric fan. If you will note in the picture, that the mechanical fan if also present. That might be redundant, but this is Arizona after all.
The entire front suspension and all of its components are all new. New coil springs and new shock absorbers were installed both front and rear. All new brake components were installed to all four wheels to include new brake drums, wheel cylinders and all brake hardware. A new Master Cylinder, and remanufactured brake booster were also installed.
All new electrical wiring from American Auto Wire was installed, along with new Parking Light lenses and new tail light lenses.
The rear cargo area’s original plywood flooring was removed and replaced with new, 3/4 inch Marine Grade plywood that was cut to fit and then sealed with waterproofing sealer. Then, it was coated with a synthetic polymer and ceramic coating to further enhance its durability.
The interior seats are from a 2019 Dodge Caravan. The front passenger seat can tilt forward for easier access to the second row seating area. Seat belts have been installed in both the front seats and the second row seats. They were only options in 1964.
The exterior has been painted in a two tone finish. Internation Harvester White over Massey Ferguson Grey. The paint is from Tractor Supply and is readily available at any Tractor Supply location. The Internation Harvester White is code I.H. 8-2951, and the Massey Ferguson Grey is code M.F. 8-2995.
All of the floor pans have been replaced and the vehicle is rust free.
I am now finished with this long winded description of this old truck except to add this. I will soon be 75 years old and have been a Machinist for most of my adult life. I did the best that I could in restoring this truck, but as with anything else, I wish I had the skills to do better. It took me five years of off and on working on this to complete it. Five years that were interrupted by three different surgeries that required long, post surgical recovery times. I still have three more projects waiting to be started. A 1976 ElCamino SS, a Short Bed 1964 Chevy C-10 and a 1940 Chevy Fleetmaster Coupe. At 75 years old I’d better get moving. The asking price is a little negotiable so call me and we can discuss it.
