Looking for its next family…..
If you think about it there are very few cars that have become cultural icons, cars that have been immortalized in music, art, and literature. The Pontiac GTO is definitely one of those cars. This particular GTO has a very unique story. It was purchased brand new by a young lady who, just a few months later got married, and she and her husband both cherished and protected their GTO for the next 53 years! Of course, life takes many turns over such a long period of time. While most of the GTOs 90,000 miles were put on in the before the turn of the century, these car-loving people just could not part with their beloved GTO. After failing its NJ Inspection in 2016 the GTO stored in their garage under a car cover, while the owner acquired a number of parts he anticipated using to bring his car back to life. But this summer, he realized the project was now beyond his capabilities and decided to offer the car for sale.
Not only is this a single family-owned 1967 GTO Convertible with just 90, 000 miles on it, but it is probably one of the most original GTOs you are ever likely to find. Over its lifetime, it has had little beyond its normal maintenance. It has a 400 CI engine, with a 4BBL carb, and an automatic transmission with a very rare HURST “his and hers” floor shifter. The interior is in remarkable shape and its black vinyl seats and door cards are almost perfect! The glass is all perfect! A new battery was fitted when the car was removed from its home and when the key was turned the engine fired right up! It should be pointed out that the brake system was low on brake fluid and is not presently functioning correctly.
At one point this car had been fitted with an aftermarket, under-dash mounted air conditioning system. That system has been removed and all of the original pulleys and bits are included in the car as are all the replacement parts the owner collected. Also included in the sale are several original GM parts. Because this car is so original, the owner agreed that the proper way to sell the car was to let the new owner decide what he wanted to do with the car. Take this very original car and keep restore it to as new condition, or to turn it into a resto-mod, or to just get it running and drive it as a survivor.
We have included a great number of photos of the car for your reference. To make one point perfectly clear, this car has not been washed in several years. We have not polished it or prepped it in any way. Interestingly, the interior smells fresh and clean. Which is a very good thing. The car is now in our showroom and you are invited to come and inspect it for yourself.
The car does have rust “in the usual places” for American cars of this vintage. Those places include at the bottom rear of both front fenders, and the bottoms of the rear fenders. Importantly, there is no serious rust where the door hinges or door striker plates are. The chassis, the main body structure, and the floors are all solid. All the top hardware is there and very solid, but a new convertible top is a must.
This is a very unique opportunity to own a one family-owned, highly desirable American car with real collector car status that has essentially not been modified in any way. We encourage you to call us to come over and inspect the car for yourself to see if this car should be a part of your collection.
If you are reading this advertisement you are probably familiar with the name Hagerty Insurance, the leader in collector car insurance, and a leader in establishing the values of collector cars. According to the Hagerty Value Guide, a 1967 Pontiac GTO Convertible when restored is potentially worth more than $150,000. Restorations are expensive, but starting with a good original car is essential to having them be both successful and cost-effective. This Pontiac GTO is just such a car.
