General
Up for auction is this 1972 Ford Gran Torino, in color code 2B Bright Red, over a black vinyl interior. This car has had a relatively recent frame-off restoration, and a full repaint in the last 2 years. The car is powered by what appears to be the original equipment 351ci V8, derived from Ford’s 335 engine family, also known as the “Cleveland” V8. It is paired with the C6 automatic transmission, column shift, and is rated at 172HP and 298 ft/lbs of torque. As a model year ‘72 vehicle, it came from the factory with no emissions equipment – the last year before it became standard – and is not required to be tested anywhere in the United States for registration. This is an excellent driver’s car that would be good as-is, with a few mild tweaks, or a great base for a full restoration.
Exterior
This Gran Torino was repainted professionally in bright red in 2020. Chrome accents are original, with minimal pitting on close examination, and in very good shape. In the pictures above, you can see some evidence of mild rust bubbling in common areas of concern – along the front edge of the hood, in the rear quarter panels above the wheel wells, and the one small rust bubble on the trunk lid. Doors are clean and rust free, and panel alignment is correct. The windshield is cracked and will have to eventually be replaced, but all other glass is in good shape. The body does have some minor dings and nicks, as shown in the pictures, but is in solid shape as well.
Interior
The interior is Ford’s standard black vinyl, with bench seats and a column shifter, and a black dashboard with typical cracking. The only equipment that isn’t factory correct is the aftermarket stereo head unit, which is non-operational. As the pictures show, there are some tears in the seats, and the headliner is sagging towards the back. The carpet and door sills are new, and in excellent shape. Some areas that need attention – the column shifter, which is loose, and will need adjustment. The instrument panel has a working temperature gauge, but the other gauges work intermittently. The headlight switch, high beam switch, and all temperature controls are functional and operate smoothly and correctly. Windows and door locks are fully operational as well.
Mechanical
The engine was recently upgraded with a new Holley 2bbl carburetor, and an electronic ignition. The current owner does note that sometimes the engine experiences intermittent starting issues after being hot. The transmission is smooth and suffers from no slip, and appears to have been upgraded with a shift kit by the previous owner. Underneath, the evidence of the frame-off restoration in 2011 is apparent, with minimal corrosion, and no rust issues in critical areas only minor surface rust. Suspension components are in good shape, with no dry or cracked rubber, and a complete exhaust.
Extra
This is a classic example of a car owned by someone that no longer has the time to spend on the car, and becomes an excellent opportunity for the next buyer. Most of the major area of concerns have been addressed, and the car needs nothing to be driven daily, or would be an excellent basis for a more complete restoration. The buyer of this car will also receive the parts that were purchased for future projects. Those parts include all the trim for a vinyl roof, a new stripe kit, and all of the various trim pieces removed during previous work.
