Okay, so it isn’t really a boat! Just so you know, I really had to hold myself back from making a Ghostbusters reference even though it is 10 years too new. Old ambulances are super cool, especially considering for many years they were based on large GM cars. Nothing confuses people more than learning that your ambulance is a Cadillac! That, or learning that you own an ambulance. The seller bought this car to make an Area 51 transport out of, but has decided to sell it instead. Find it here on eBay in Illinois with an asking price of $9,000. Thanks to Matt W. for sending us the link!
The alien mannequin in the back is not included with the sale, however it is certainly indicative of the seller’s original plan for the car.The driver’s seat will need to be recovered and the driver’s door latch will need some work to function properly. All of the glass is intact. Though it is definitely the wrong year, even the seller couldn’t help bringing up Ghostbusters and states that it would be a good candidate for an Ecto-1 tribute. I agree, as I love that movie and even if you restore it original people are still going to make jokes! Plus how cool would it be to have a tricked out ambulance?
Though nearly every picture of this car includes a battery charger, it does run properly and the seller makes it sound like the charger isn’t necessary to get it to start and run. Under the hood is likely a Cadillac 472 cubic inch engine, which sounds big but this is also quite a large vehicle requiring such power in order to not be sluggish. A slow ambulance doesn’t do anyone any good! The seller also states that it drives, but also says “anyone can tell you it’s like driving a boat.” While a Cadillac based ambulance must certainly have a soft ride, the extreme length must also be taken into account!
I love this thing! Old ambulances are always a hit, and I’ve always wanted to have an old hearse which is almost the same thing. The only difference is paint color and the likelihood of passenger survival. Ambulances seem much less common than hearses of this vintage, and as such this Cadillac would be a show-stopper if restored properly. Being that this ambulance is in pretty good condition for a project, I think the asking price is quite reasonable. Plus, the seller seems motivated and is taking offers. Would you restore it as it would’ve been? Or fix it up to your personal tastes?
The car needs way too much work for the asking as it seems that nothing has been done on it since it was taken out of service.
It is missing both batteries in the picture plus a lot of other work.
High prices are for clean original cars.
As a Paramedic working 12’s in a Type III (box squad), I can’t begin to imagine working in the back of one of these when first responder’s were only trained in first aid. They treated their patients with gasoline…mash the pedal and get them to the hospital now !
There needs to be a tutorial on how to take effective pictures for an eBay listing. The ability to post 24 shots and only a few of the interior and not even the drivers compartment? Underbody and under the doors etc would be useful especially with a 9K BIN.
Agreed….both for ebay and craigslist regardless of selling price. There should be a requirement.
I’d probably lighten it up, put a killer blown big-block Chevy in it, and go to the drag strip. I would bring down the house as I blasted down the quarter mile with the lights flashing and sirens blaring.
Ghostbusters or no Ghostbusters, this is a human meat wagon. That fact haunts me ,and or some other people. I would just leave that zombie alone, maybe it’s been in there for a while, who knows, maybe this thing is meant to be scary.
Who you gonna call? Not this seller….
Welcome to the world of private sellers or should I say “Collectors”!
Asking $9000 for a $2500 car anywhere else in the good ole USA.
Back in the early 1980’s a friend traded a pair of ’71 Impalas for a ’62 Cadillac ambulance/hearse with the 390 V8 hooked to a HydraMatic transmission,a previous owner must’ve had visions of building a sin bin out of it because it had a bed of sorts built in the rear area plus a roof vent and a tire carrier on the rear door,it was pretty rough but we had a ball riding around in it though, even the original front seat had given way to a pair of sort of mounted bucket seats and my friend installed an in dash AM/FM/8 track stereo in it,we used to freak out a lot of people in that believe me.
