EXCLUSIVE: 1974 Ford Courier Survivor

This could be one of the cleanest Ford Couriers we’ve seen in a long time! Reader William H has decided to part ways with this low mileage truck. It’s covered 75k miles since new, has seen one repaint and comes with some of its original documentation. After a recent tune-up, it’s running and driving great. It’s located in Forked River, New Jersey and William is asking $9,500. If you’d love to give it a new home, be sure to contact William via the form below.

The Courier has seen quite a few evolutions over the years, starting as a delivery sedan, then a compact truck and eventually being a Fiesta based ute. This one is from the first generation of compact trucks and was actually based on the Mazda B-series of trucks.

Since it’s based on the Mazda, power is provided by a Mazda built 1.8 liter inline 4-cylinder with all 74 horses being routed through an automatic. It might not be the fastest or most powerful truck out there, but the 1,400-pound capacity is quite impressive for a truck its size. This truck’s engine looks to be clean and is said to run great. Besides an engine tune-up, it’s also had the brakes done recently as well.

Looking this truck over, it really does look to be straight, solid and in fantastic condition. I have no doubt that the mileage is correct and that this thing has a ton of life left in it. If you’d love to give it a new home, be sure to contact William via form below! So, what do you think of this little survivor?

  • Asking Price: $9500

Cool little truck, I’d be interested if it was cheaper. Best of luck with your sale.

That’s the Mazda engine, not the SOHC 2.3 Ford engine. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. It’s just that parts availability is an unknown, at least to me.

I spent the Summer of `75 in California, and these trucks were everywhere!
A lot in that color even.
There was a mini backlash against them as I recall, by the custom van guys at the cruise nights.
    But ultimately they accepted them.

I always thought the Mazda was the best of the bunch, possibly because of it’s affiliation with Ford, these were great little trucks. I don’t think they are $10g’s worth of vehicle, but this truck is everything most of us want Detroit to make again, well, here it is now. I suppose that makes it worth it.

Pretty tough little trucks. A HS friend got a football scholarship to St George and would drive home on the weekends-517 miles one way…never a lick of a problem.
In the fall though it didn’t sleep two right tackles in the cab very well-I’d have my knees tucked under me on the passenger floor with my upper body on the seat and he’d be slumped over the wheel or propped in the drivers corner!

You must have been some SMALL tackles! :)

Needs a 4 speed. Full stop.

        😂
Built like short fireplugs but we were a whole lot more limber at 18-20 years old and pain was never voiced-a guy could lose his Man Card for such an infraction! 😎😆
And yes-most definitely needs a 4speed! Otherwise passing in traffic was measured with a calendar.

I remember seeing these around. I never knew they made a slushbox version. I would think it was likely pretty slow with the auto trans. It would have been a 2 or 3 speed trans I am guessing with pretty large spacing between the gears….

one the same color with the manual trans sold on BaT for $7700 or so a while back

My company took away my 3/4 ton Ford pickup and gave me one of these during the fuel crunch. I was running around the country opening motels hauling a load of tools for my crews. I hated it and it got terrible mileage but I couldn’t kill it. It wouldn’t go 200 miles without a fuel stop, which made for a lot of stops between coasts. They are tough little trucks.

A few years back when I lived in a small N.E. Texas town ( Gun Barrel City) I saw several of these around the country side. One fellow in 7 points had two for sale. I never stopped so I don’t know how much he was asking but he sold both. At the time these were new Toyota had the lions share of sales on mini pickups. An ex bil had a Mazda which was a very strong little truck.
    God bless America

Sorry, autobox truck isn’t going to fetch 9K. I’ve driven these with the stick and they are rudimentary utilitarian fun vehicles that get great mileage but put a slushbox in front of them and forget it. Like pushing a fridge uphill in San Fran with roller blades on…

Still, a nice clean little truck, and I wish the seller the best of luck with the ask.

I had one of these,it was the toughest truck I’ve ever seen. The previous owner was a fisherman and ran truck in saltwater daily so frame had serious rust. Motor and 4 speed trans ran great used no oil at over 100,000 miles. I ended up selling it for $100. to a guy who pulled the engine and tranny to put in his crabbing boat. Said Courier on outside , but some Japanese company on the inner fender.
