Old #57: 1957 Chevrolet Racer

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Every once in a while you come across and older race car, like the one listed here on Craigslist in Eufaula, Oklahoma, that makes you wonder what this history of the car might be. While the seller doesn’t state any specific history of the car, that patina paint might cause some to follow the rabbit trail of where it came from.

The seller states that this two-door post holds a small block 283 between the fenders. Unfortunately, it does not run and will not turn over. If the engine is locked up, thankfully there is not shortage of small block Chevy’s in the world to drop in to replace it. The power plant might be the least of the worries with this car, though.

The listing is pretty clear that the floorboards are rusty and the pictures verify that they are pretty rough. The trunk also looks to have some serious cancer along with various parts of the exterior. But what would be expected of and old race car that’s been ridden hard and put away wet?

Without knowing even a little of the provenance of this car it would be hard to know if it might carry any real value. As it sits, $5,000 appears a little steep. But for someone that finds old race cars to be really desirable then maybe it’s worth the asking price. This one looks to be a little beyond restoring and may not even be suitable for the street without some significant work. So, is this an interesting prospect for a project or should Old #57 be left to rust in peace?

It might be worth that kind of money if it had an actual NASCAR pedigree, but I’m not sure how you could even prove that. It could have just as easily been a dirt track or local stock car racer back in the 1960s and 1970s like so many of these got turned into.

$5K is an awful lot of money for that. Even if it was near me, I would definitely take a pass.

This should be euthanasia, in Eufaula.

Whew .. I just got done spray painting my chevette with racing stripes and sanding for patina .
I figure my Chevrolet being a rare racer is worth mega bucks too.. no papers but I guess it’s good for a Go

yes Super is right, the way the front fenders are cut looks like it could have been a dirt track stock car. Would be cool to restore as a stock car but 5 large seems high. Hope someone brings it back either way.

Dirt track cars get seriously banged up their first time around the track, not a dirt car.

No roll bar. It was either a circle track build that never got completed, or something else that was probably done in the mid-70’s, when everyone was running around doing bicentennial motifs.

Maybe half that money and set a budget for a cool Rat rod? Pretty don’t make a car run.

Not sure what this is, but I’m betting it never saw a race track unless it was parked in the parking lot. Even in the “ good old days” a roll bar of some type was required. I don’t see any sign of a roll bar of any description.

It is a fake Gasser/street racer. It took me a minute the recognize the Briggs and Stratton fuel tank hanging off the core support. “That my friends is a REAL gas!”
(sorry about that, I have been off my medication for a few days.)

I’m thinking fake or not completed. The body looks pretty straight for a racer that saw any action, plus the lack of roll cage or safety harness.
