1 of 1,986: 1970 Pontiac GTO 455 V8

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Muscle car sales had begun to fade in 1970, and the market “founder” – the Pontiac GTO – was no exception. The hottest engine offered was now the 455 cubic inch V8, and just 2,227 copies went into 1970 GTOs with automatic transmissions (89% were coupes like the seller’s car). Once a pace car, this generally nice GOAT can be found in Bennett, Colorado, and is available here on Facebook Marketplace for $35,000. Once again, T.J. is on the hunt for cool tips!

The 1970 model year was the first time a GTO could be had with anything more than 400 cubic inches. That was due to GM relaxing a policy that had imposed the displacement limit on mid-sized automobiles. The horsepower rating between 360 and 370 wasn’t greater than the hottest 1969 GTO, but more torque was introduced. The seller’s car is one of just 1,986 of these coupes to be ordered in ’70 paired with an auto tranny.

No mention is made of any PHS report to back up this largely original Pontiac. The odometer reads just over 50,000 miles, which would indicate this car has spent a lot of time in the garage. But that wasn’t when it served as a pace car at Pikes Peak Speedway in Fountain, Colorado (when was that, back in the 1970s?).

The gold paint and vinyl roof covering seem to be okay (factory materials?). The interior is not as nice but is certainly passable for Cars & Coffee, but it is showing its 55 years. We’re told the car “runs healthy”, so perhaps nothing much is needed until one day you decide to pull the big trigger on a restoration.

Put a ‘1’ in front of the odometer number.

Actually, while the optional 455 was PMD’s introduction as the smog engine. It was not the HOT engine. The 400 CID was standard while the 400 CID Ram Air III and Ram Air IV were still available. The GTO’s Ram Air IV was the hot engine! 242 in the VIN would tell us if it was a GTO in 1970. Which it has.

Nice enough project car. IMHO 35k for a Lemans (aka automatic trans grocery getter) with “GTO” stuck on it seems a bit high, but that’s just me. ;-)

The tires and rims doesn’t do the car justice.
