1 Of 844? 1968 Buick GS 350 4-Speed

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

A new offering for 1968, the GS 350 offered the sporty good looks of the muscular GS400 with slightly decreased performance and price. This 1968 Buick GS 350 in Beloit, Wisconsin spent most of its life in the deep South, and comes to market in highly complete and original condition. The seller claims only 844 sales combined the GS350 with a four-speed manual transmission in ’68. The listing here on eBay has attracted over 20 bids to a market value above $6500, and it’s sure to rise from there. What look like Buick center caps on Chevy wheels detract from an otherwise original profile. Thanks go to Barn Finds reader local_sheriff for the tip!

Wide tail lights, chrome trunk trim and the center “GS350” badge add character to the Buick’s backside. Dual exhaust was standard on the GS350 package.

While a sportier steering wheel accompanied the GS400, it was optional on the GS350. A standard bench seat should be no surprise from a time period when only wagons and the occasional full-sized SUV seated more than six. The GS350 came standard with a column-shifted three-speed manual, but the four-speed makes a nice upgrade. Minimal wear on the black and white interior supports the claim of fewer than 68,000 original miles, a dichotomy with the confession of a sometimes-faulty speedometer. Still, I see nothing here to suggest the car has covered more than 110,000 miles. Some people can trash a car in 40,000 miles, and this one seems to have been well-kept.

The numbers-matching 350 “runs strong,” and the seller claims they would drive it cross country. While GM offered no fewer than four separate 350 cid V8s during this time-frame, each is different. As a luxury brand, Buick’s engines generally deliver bountiful torque, and this 280 HP gem makes a velvety 375 lb-ft of torque to get this mid-sized muscle car off the line. Getting 400 HP from the Buick is possible, but the 350 will satisfy most drivers, especially with the spicy stick-shift. Have you owned a bench seat floor-shifted V8?

While the Rallies may not be correct on this ’68, at least the ’67 GS340 sold with these otherwise Chevy wheels with their Buick-specific center caps

Like everything about the Buick except the rear wheel openings. Wish they had it like the ’70-’72 models.

Not saying I’m 100% correct, but the wheel combo is correct if the GS has disc brakes from the factory!
I own the big brother, 68-GS400 convertible, very VIN specific 44667, I believe I have talked with the same guy bout 2-3 years ago on one trying at the time for 3g or less before I did buy my GS barn find in Lake Mills, Wisconsin, from a father son collection, had 80 or more in a few sheds, mostly Convertibles and about half were Pace car editions!
Also GS should have a factory chrome a/c lid 16 1/2″!
I’ll try to answer other 68 GS questions as they are different from 69

I believe you’re correct re the wheels. The 68s had the 4 caliper front discs and the standard Buick wheels had clearance issues.

Correct, the 1967-68 Chevelle was the same way. Ordering Disc brakes was manditory to also have Rally wheels as no other wheel they had would clear the calipers.

That’s very interesting to read Brian; I know I’ve seen other Buicks than just the ’67 GS340 wearing Chevy Rallies but that can of course have been for cosmetical reasons. IMO these Chevy wheels look good on just about anything so I’m eager to learn what Buicks were delievered with these as OE equipment.

Personally I find the ’66 to be the prettiest of any Skylarks,
however I like the ’68-’69 due to the design’s strong Buick identity

The ’67 and ’68 rallye is wheel option “V6” (N66), and yes, If you wanted disk brakes with sport rims this is what you ordered. To bad they were discontinued for ’69

First time I’ve seen a motor running (note the spinning alternator) on BarnFinds. A huge kudos to the seller!

I agree that it is a definite plus to see the motor running. Unfortunately all that white smoke indicates a possible head gasket issue. Also the a/c compressor is not hooked up. I still like the car especially with the 4-speed but it is going to need some work.

The ‘smoke’ is just exhaust condensation on what is obviously a cold day. In one of the interior pics on the eBay ad you can see a pickup truck – same issue.

I like it, not a high HP car, but could clean up well and make a really nice cruiser. There aren’t a lot of manual transmission Grand Sports (all years) and having factory air is a huge bonus. Assuming no rust issues under the top, this could be a very nice car, I’d be tempted to re-paint it a different color to make it stand out a little more. Lot’s of little things that need attention, but it appears tit could be a daily driver as you attacked those little things.

Very nice car hopefully for reasonable money. OK color. Bench seat 4 sp is RARE but buckets and console would (in my opinion) be more desirable.

I undercoat a lot of cars like this where my customers don’t want to put $1,000’s of dollars into the restoration of the undercarriage BUT want to “roll the clock back on the rust, seal it from getting any worse while attaining a really nice long-term underbody clean curb appeal look. A process like this along with some expert detailing (that we also do) can really bring a car like this a long way.

Not a big fan of the body style but a lot of people were !! Cool find!

Nice car and probably a better balanced driver with the 350 as opposed to a big block. As John pointed out, there are quite a few items to address but apparently nothing major. Unusual to see a stick shift with a bench seat but I see that combo every day in my ’95 F150.

i ordered a new 1969 GS 350, FALL OF 68. Rare car now. ordered red, white bucket seat factory A/C, 4-speed, stock steel wheel with dod dish caps. uncle sam called me in 69 so sold to my uncle in Atlanta, GA. Car was a dream to drive. might not win many muscle car races in that day, but was competitive.
