17k Mile Special Edition: 1981 Pontiac Trans Am

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

We have seen some really low mile Trans Ams come to market lately. This one is no exception with only 17k miles on the odometer. It is located in Royal Palm Beach, Florida and listed here on Craigslist. We appreciate Tony Primo for bringing this car to our attention. It is a 1981 Pontiac Trans Am that is loaded with options including the Y84 Special Edition package. The seller is asking $59,900 and the car has been listed for about two weeks. This car represents the last year of the second generation Trans Am and the seller believes it is one of the last ones built.

Under the hood, the car is powered by its original L37 301 cubic inch V8 engine rated at 155 horsepower. This was the base engine option and Pontiac also offered the Chevrolet LG4 305 cubic inch V8 engine and the Pontiac LU8 turbocharged 301 cubic inch V8 engine. After not offering a 4 speed manual transmission in 1980, a buyer could equip their Trans Am with a stick shift but it could only be mated with the Chevrolet LG4 305 cubic inch V8 engine rated at a measly 150 horsepower. The highest rated engine in terms of horsepower was the LU8 turbocharged 301 cubic inch V8 engine. This turbo 301 cubic inch V8 engine (4.9 liter) was rated at 200 horsepower in 1981. The LU8 had a Garrett TB305 turbo and a Rochester Quadrajet 4-barrel carburetor.

Pontiac made a change to the hood bird in 1981 which is unique and displays much more detail to the feathers. This Trans Am also has T-tops and the WS6 Special Performance Package with was an optional suspension upgrade which made it one of the best handling cars available in the late 1970’s and early 1980s. The WS6 came with 15×8 snowflake or turbo wheels. Even though this is a naturally aspirated V8 powered Trans Am, it has the turbo wheels. There is no mention if the wheels were changed at some point.

The interior looks flawless and the car is heavily optioned with cruise control, power windows, air conditioning and AM/FM cassette stereo. This car has the optional deluxe interior with 64B1 Pimlico cloth tan interior which was a one year material for Trans Ams. The seller states that the car drives like new. Pontiac built 33,493 Trans Ams in 1981 and 5,142 were Y84 special editions with T-Tops. The seller claims this is one of 1,160 Y84’s with the base engine option.

Nice collection for sure! And I assume he has a daily driver to go along with the 4 Trans Ams.

It is a fine specimen, but a skosh under $60k? Someone’s got a bad case of Barrett-Jacksonitis here. Agree with Mark on the other Ponchos in the lead pic. He/she appears to have a stable going there & all of them with the ‘cat face’ front clip. Must be partial to them. Nothing wrong with that.

Miserable year for any car, especially this underpowered sticker show, the HP in this is embarrassing to be considered anything else but a joke, I’m a Pontiac man, this is a joke, in 79 I was 18 and went to look at a Trans Am, I bought the 301 Grand Prix next to it, no one wanted to race me in that
