1950 Mercury Eight Convertible

Update 5/8/13 – After ending the $200 starting bid/no reserve auction early, the seller has relisted it with a $25k starting bid. Must have gotten nervous that it was going to go cheap?

From 4/23/13 – The 1950 Mercury could be one of the most easily recognizable hot rods of all time and as a result there aren’t many original ones left. While there were a considerable number built, many have been customized and turned into “lead sleds”. This 1950 Mercury Convertible is not only unmodified, but has never been restored. It was pulled out of a barn and moved to the seller’s garage, where it has been parked since 2004. The seller has given up on restoring it, so they have listed it here on eBay without a reserve.

Customizers have been modifying Mercurys since 1949 and the tradition of chopping and channeling has carried on ever since. We always appreciate a good rod, but original cars like this really get us going. This one appears to be solid and complete. The interior appears to be intact too, but the floors will need some work. The owner started restoring it and had all new wiring professionally installed. They don’t state whether the engine is the original 255 cui Flathead V8 or what condition it’s in.

This Merc is in need of attention, but should make a sweet ride after it’s all put together. Hopefully the next owner will preserve its originality and resist the temptation to make “improvements”…

The car is an icon. I hope it gets restored to original. As for the engine, a late ’40’s, early ’50’s style hop up with Edelbrock or Ardun heads and some other period goodies would be ok. I’d want to see dual exhausts too. A Merc convertible without duals would be like a dog without ears.

I definitely agree with the above. There have been too many Mercury cars of this era that have been turned into lead sleds. So many in fact that it makes you wonder just what one of those looked like in original livery. Keep it original except for installing dual exhausts. I like duals on a flathead.

Hey Chris – in my opoinion the Ardun heads are worth infinitely more than a fully restored ’50 Merc – I courted my future wife in a ’49 and bought her an engagement ring as an alternative to a buying a set of original Ardun Heads; the heads probably wouldn’t have lasted but the marriage has.

I WOULD GIVE UP MY ’74 VETTE AND ’70 AND ’83 EL-CAMINOS FOR THE ’50 MERC IN SLY’S MOVIE COBRA. CAUSE IT IS AN AWESOME RIDE. THIS TOO IS AN AWESOME RIDE TOO AND I ALSO AGREE THAT IT SHOULD BE PRESERVED WITH JUST A FEW PERIOD CORRECT MODIFICATIONS INCLUDING FLAME THROWING DUEL EXHAUST .

This ‘ol girl has lots of potential!!, but she’ll be priced out of my range. Its up to the seller to find that guy who will return it to original, and at age 75, he should be smart enough. I praise the seller for realizing his limitations and to pass it on rather than let it crumble to death under some nasty old canvas tarp like sooooooo many end up. I’m 70 and starting to feel like the seller. “So many cars!-so little time”

Scot : 258CID 3 3/8″ X 3 3/8′ bore/stroke. Not a maxed-out flat head, but a good step up. My recall is you could go up to 306CID with a block salvaged from a WWII tank with extra thick walls. My bro and I built one to approz 296CID; I did the block relieving and port work, we also used a dual coil front mounted distributor which was rumored to have come from a Duesy.

The 3 3/8 flat head was very popular back in the day with the 59 AB block, and the “Ardun” conversion was also popular but hard to get. I got lucky back in school and bought a 50 with a conversion in it, for a heavy car it would flat move, I’v heard it said that from light to light there was nothing quicker than a good “Flat Head” !!
