1965 Mustang Fastback: Orange Stang

1965 Mustang Fastback

At first glance, this Mustang Fastback looks pretty clean. While it is dusty and dirty from its time in the barn, the paint still appears to be shiny and I don’t see much in the way of rust. A closer inspection though reveals this is a respray, although it appears to have been well done, and there are signs of some serious rust hiding in the floors. Even with these issues, it could actually be a good buy! Fastbacks will always be in demand and this car does have a 289 V8 in it. The starting bid of $9k seems a bit steep though, so at this price the paint better shine up nicely and the engine better run well. If you’ve been on the hunt for a Fastback project, you can find this one here on eBay in Bristol, Virginia.

Hmmmmmmm… Well, It’s certainly in better condition than that ’66 earlier this week, also, this one’s a fastback.

The blue engine is not original to the car and I bet the reserve is more than $10k

It’s already more than I’d be willing to pay despite the fact that I like this vintage of Fastback. Like Mike says, blue is the wrong color for the engine. It seems to me that ’66 was the year Ford started painting its engines that shade of blue (flatheads from ’45-’49 were a lighter shade of blue). ’65s were still gold.

The valve covers are certainly blue, but the block appears to be “grime” colored, perhaps still the proper black underneath the grime? Back in the day, these cars would get a fairly serious top end tear down about every 50 to 100k miles or so, when things would start not running right. For some reason, the repair shops liked to repaint the valve covers (and the oil pan, if it was dropped as part of the process), and they often used Ford Blue for everything Ford. This one may be one if those, as the stuff hanging on the engine looks mostly stock “C” code 2 barrel stuff. So the factory block is nothing special on this one, anyway.

One of these is worse condition is a dream car of mine to find for a father-son project. So many go the tired and true route, but I’d so love to see one of these Mustang fastbacks with an Ecoboost V6/6-speed/SVT Cobra IRS.

Now, this is a combination that you won’t see everyday and the performance of the Ecoboost V6 is proven just as powerful as any period carbed V8.

I have one in much worse condition, it is so rusty it may just act as a donor since most all the interior parts are there, and drivetrain & suspension missing. Some Mustang catalogs offer a sheet metal Fastback package, all the panels you need to convert your coupe to a Fastback. A Ecoboost V6/6-speed/SVT Cobra IRS would be just the ticket, good idea Tom.
