The seller of this 1969 Chevrolet Camaro “X44” tells us that the car was on their property when it was purchased and now they want it gone. It’s listed for sale here on eBay and is located in King, North Carolina (the little town I grew up in). Unfortunately, I don’t remember this particular Camaro. Bidding is up to just over $2,000 but the reserve has not been met yet.
By using this handy VIN/cowl tag decoder at camaros.org, we can see that this car was originally Frost Green, code #59 with a Midnight Green vinyl top. You can also see that it’s been sitting for a good long time and will require some pretty serious metalwork to be put back correctly. But what, you ask, is an “X44”?
Well, it turns out that X44 was the code Chevrolet used for cars that were not Z28s or RS cars — so honestly it’s nothing terribly special as far as 1969 Camaros are concerned. Since posting the auction, the seller has found out that the 350 V8 in the car is from a 1969 car, but not necessarily from this one.
The medium green standard bucket seats look pretty sad along with the rest of the interior. We do know that it was built during the third week of August in 1969, making it towards the end of production, and was assembled in Norwood, Ohio. It’s going to take a lot of work to make this car pretty again. Do you think it’s worth it?
I’ve driven past King, NC many times when I commuted along 52. Can’t say I would have stopped had I known this Camaro was sitting there, though. Perhaps a rare car would be worth saving from this state, but there are far better starting points out there for reasonable money.
I doubt it. Needs everything, and no special VIN or cowl plate.
It looks really rusty, if that hole in the firewall just below the trim tag is any indication of how bad this car is, then good luck to the next owner. I also wish them good luck registering this car, the seller is telegraphing that he’s going to wash his hands of the car as soon as money is exchanged and it leaves his property.

If they really just “want it gone” there wouldn’t be a reserve. Just saying.
The “HK” engine code looks like a 69 Impala 350/300 HP Powerglide, so it’s not original to this fine Camaro. That’s a deal breaker for me.
It’s not a lost title, somebody out there has the title to it and still legally owns it, or what’s left of it. Don’t spend 50 cents on it until you find out who really owns it. And the bidding is over $3,000 and the reserve isn’t met. Damn, that’s insane.
I searched abandoned vehicles, you are right, I wouldn’t buy this, either. I don’t think this guy has the right to sell this yet. It’s not his car to sell.
Dare try to move it and tear in half it will…
Wow…that’s just crazy. Who is bidding this scrap car up like that? I would’ve thought the dirt under it should just be scraped out so you could finish burying it in the field.
Who is bidding this up? Why that famous guy (now also working part-time at Bring-A-Trailer). HILL is his name, Mr. S.HILL.
Future COPO-clone.
X44? Not even a good candidate for a VIN-ectomy.
He needs to contact DMV to sort out ownership. Then sober up.
bidders need to sober up. it’s junk.
Personally seriously if it was mine I just give it away and you can take that to the bank
