1971 AMC AMX With Rare 360 Go Pack

This 1971 AMC AMX is a nice find. It is a radical departure from its ’70 predecessor and is equipped with the desirable “GO” package which brings some nice features and of course, it’s wrapped in Wild Plum Metallic paint. Located in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, this AMX is available, here on eBay for a BIN price of $6,599.99.

While the AMX had been its own two-seater model for its first three years, 1968-1970, by ’71 it became a high-end package on the four-seater Javelin. Total ’71 AMX production was just a bit over 2k units on a total of 26K Javelins. The special “GO” package included a four-barrel carburetor equipped 360 CI V8 engine with dual exhausts, “T” stripe, black rear valance panel, Rally-Pac instruments, handling package,  cowl air induction hood, heavy-duty engine cooling, twin-grip differential, power disc brakes, E60-15 tires on styled steel wheels, and a space-saver spare tire. The one option available for the GO package was more GO, courtesy of a larger, 401 CI engine.

The seller states that this car was an estate sale purchase and it has been off of the road for years. The body is a bit banged up with, scratches, dings, dents scrapes, etc. Not sure what kind of a boo-boo befell the front driver’s side so another fender was in order. And, it and the driver’s door don’t line-up particularly well. The quarter panels both have problems and will require a bit of metalwork. The seller does state that the fiberglass induction hood is sound with no cracks or separation.

Under the hood is a non-running 285 gross HP, 360 CI V8 engine. The seller describes this car as one that rolls and steers but does not stop, uh-oh, that’s a problem. This AMX is listed as a 111K mile example so assuming that the engine is not stuck or seriously damaged internally, it may still have some life left in it. Of the approximately 2,000 AMXs produced in ’71 about 1,300 had the 360 CI motor and the remainder were endowed with the 401 CI powerplant. A three-speed automatic transmission gets the power to the rear wheels.

The interior is a bit of a mixed bag. The dash and instrument panel, along with the door cards, look fine. The front seats are split and will need to be recovered but the floors have fallen out in places. The rust-through is extensive enough that it looks as if water had settled into the interior and just sat there as it worked its worst on the floor pans. Then again, the underside of this AMX is pretty rusty too so it’s not clear how and where the rust started. In my quest for original radios, I’ve missed on this example, it’s gone. Of note is the back seat, a white backrest with a black seat bottom? That can’t be right.

This is a pretty rare car, it’s nicely optioned and the fact that it was produced by a fallen flag, AMC, just adds to its allure. This AMX is one to restore, wouldn’t you agree?

With a non running engine the transmission and rear and will also need attention. The body definitely does. Body parts are hard to find for these so unless your a good fabricator it would be expensive.

Incorrect, body parts to repair this car are readily available but this car is pretty gone. Would be worth trying to find a doner body.

John that’s why you join an AMC club if you purchase any AMC. You can connect with other enthusiast and locate parts that might be hard to find.
This particular car is DEFINITELY going to require some serious body work, but we have seen far worse for a lot more money 💰 for instance a burned up Shelby for 25 large. If I were in the market I would take this over that one or plenty of other rust buckets that have been on this cite. IMO

Was the trunk-lock delete option offered for weight and balance considerations, or to get some air to pets riding in the trunk?

I believe the style was to much for most muscle car lovers. Now for people who loved a sporty , classy different vehicle these had it . They lost the Muscle car heading with this change from the 68 , 69 AMX’s. Now they were cool !

I like the 71-74’s, but this one would be best for repairing another car. I hate to say that, because I have a 71, but with all the issues it has, a decent body would do very well to have this drivetrain, and options.
