32k Mile Survivor: 1975 Porsche 914

Over the past few months, we’ve noticed that Porsche prices seem to be leveling out. While prices might not be climbing like they had been, these German classics are still desirable. Even 914s are still sought after, well at least nice examples. Take this ’75, it’s a low mileage car in great shape and has already been bid up to over $10k! I remember when you could buy nice 914s for a few thousand dollars, but clearly, those days are long gone. If you have been in the market for an air cooled Porsche, you can’t get much nicer than this one. Find it here on eBay in Riverside, California.

The seller claims the car is all original, including the bright blue paint. The odometer is showing 32k miles and given how it looks I’m inclined to believe it. The interior looks fantastic and really isn’t showing its age. I’m a bit curious about the turned aluminum panels I see on the door panels and door jams. Obviously, they weren’t an option offered by Porsche. Does anyone remember seeing panels like that in any aftermarket catalogs?

We get lots of photos of the trunk, which does look nice, but we don’t get to see the engine. Then again, there really isn’t much to see with these mid-engined sports cars. And that brings me to my one complaint about the 914, engine access. It’s a pain to get into the engine bay to do anything more than basic service. For major repairs, you better plan on dropping the entire engine. Hopefully, that won’t be necessary with this car anytime in the near future.

Other than a few dents and dings, this Porsche is like new inside and out. I would like to see a few photos of the underside and engine, but hopefully, the seller can send additional photos. It will be interesting to see what it ends up going for!

Gone, apparently. Will be interesting to see if it shows up soon on some flipper’s site, with a much higher opening bid….

Hi Ray, for $200, flipper’s paradise. I know, who knows what it went for, just an outstanding example here. I remember, it was a popular car for a spell. Seemed, it was the only Porsche Joe Lunchpail could afford. I heard the 2.0 was a bit underpowered, and the 6 banger, was the one to have. (Saw them 914/6’s clean up at Road America years ago) Someone sure loved this one.

I’ve never driven a 914-4, Howard, but did have all-too-brief track time with a race-prepped 914-6. That was a sweet little beast, with great handling and plenty of straight-line speed. And the sound of a Porsche flat-six wound up tight was a joy to the ears….

The four-cylinder cars were popular, but seemed to suffer a bit from the “VW-Porsche” stigma. Not Real Porsches, and all that. IIRC, the first ones had a 1.7-liter engine, which definitely would have been underpowered!

Don’t know what one of these brings nowadays, but suspect it might be a reach for Joe Lunchpail’s son….

It wasn’t sold for $200, the listing just “ended.” Note that there were 0 bids. More than likely someone purchased it off auction, OR, offered a price the seller could live with if he would end the listing early.

You can even hold your breath waiting. I bet it won’t be long.

These gained popularity in the early 70’s in CA. with the beach/surfer crowd bc of there great sand handling!

Had the twin to this Laguna Blau 914 back in the early ’80’s. Stupid fun. Tweaked it a bit to 120 hp or so. One of the best handling cars I ever had for blasting over the Cascades from Portland to Bend in!

I know that people are going nuts over these. When I was younger these were
considered butt ugly cars. It is still to me, and with that VW engine they were rather slow. I had a Porsche , the more prettier one. I would never buy another one. Getting it worked on every month got old really fast.

I’m curious, Gene–what kind of Porsche did you have? We’ve got a 356 and a 911. Neither of them has required much in the way of maintenance, other than routine oil changes and the like. (We did put a clutch and water pump in the 911 last year, but those were the first actual repairs in 3 years of ownership.) The 356 is over 50 years old, and we don’t hesitate to drive it, as long as the roads are dry.

This looked like a nice example and yes, they are all under powered, even the 6. I have a 4 and the lack of torque rarely bothers me, for it’s not what these cars are about. It’s more about effortlessly taking a curve at speed and after 4 years of ownership, I still get goose bumps thinking I could have went faster. Depending on chassis and hell hole pictures (under the battery), this could be well past the $20K mark.
