We were recently contacted by Reader Nathan G and his brother about helping them find new homes for their late father’s collection of cars. So, we are going to be auctioning off the collection, starting with this 1967 Volvo 122S. They have five more cars that need to go, so be sure to take a look at those as well! This Volvo is definitely a project, but they have the bulletproof B18 running. Unfortunately, it needs work to be driven, but it’s a great start! So, if you’d love to give this Volvo a new home, take a closer look and be sure to bid.
Their father didn’t tell them much about his cars so they, unfortunately, don’t know any of this car’s history. They know it has rust issues and that it’s going to need clutch and brake work to move under its own power. Thankfully, they were able to send over lots of photos of the car, including views of the worst of the rust. While it definitely has some issues, we’ve seen worse cars fixed back up to pristine condition.
Between our Rally Wagon, our 145 Wagon and the 122S we revived, you might say we have a little bit of hands-on experience with Volvos. And from those experiences, we’ve learned a few things about these cars. First, the engines are incredibly durable and robust, especially these B18s. We also discovered that new interior components are a challenge to come by, at least at a reasonable price. Values are on the rise though, so parts availability has already improved greatly. This one looks to be complete, but you are going to need to replace lots of soft parts. A few companies are making upholstery kits, so you should be able to get this one looking good again on the inside.
Here is the B18 I mentioned earlier in all of its tappy goodness! I’ve actually heard more than a few people compare these engines to a well-built sewing machine, both in durability and in sound. When properly tuned with the valves adjusted, they really aren’t any noisier than any other 4-cylinder from this era, but because of how dependable they are most are run long past their recommended maintenance intervals. And they tend to just keep on running, so it’s really no surprise that this one runs. While the engine bay needs lots of detailing and some work, it’s good to see that everything is original and that this car was equipped with the brake booster.
Getting this Amazon back on the road is going to require a lot of work, but it could be a great project for someone looking to learn and get their hands dirty. The family has set a low and very realistic reserve, as they realize it is in need of a lot of work. Here’s another great find, again, a $100 bid? That’s it? That’s crazy. Ok, the rust may turn some folks off, but certainly not wasted. These were great cars, and a 2 door. I think, there will always be high end classic car sales, it’s these “not so perfect” examples that will take a hit. Nobody even wants it for the treasure trove of parts here, that’s the real kicker.

The first bid put it past the reserve. Hopefully, the next owner will keep us posted on what they end up doing with it!
The left rear fender is evidence of this being the second instance of major rot. The lifting of body filler, underneath the chrome strip is ominous.
On the other hand, mechanically these were an extremely good design.

Watch for splits emanating from the bottom of the firewall up the inner fender. I had a few. Love driving them but rust kills them.
This body style other than the P1800 is one I would like to own. Too many stokes in the fire right now!
